Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

I'm very well-schooled in the world of IKEA products - one might say I'm borderline obsessed with the store. Chat Icon Have assembled everything from wardrobes to beds to tables to entertainment centers.

DH and I are in the beginning stages of outlining what we want to do to with our kitchen; for those that have gone the IKEA route, please tell me the good, the bad and the ugly.

We're absolutely not opposed to doing most/all of the work ourselves.

TIA!

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

We love our Ikea cabinets, but they were a real b1tch to assemble. The problem was that everything us packaged separately, so first you would have to dig through a million boxes just to find the right pieces to assemble each section. Once DH got the hang of it, it did move along. But he had many frustrating moments.

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

friends of mine just redid their whole kitchen using IKEA from the appliances, cabinets and flooring. They said the cabinets took a while to put together but they look amazing and the quality seems good. I would have never thought they were from IKEA!

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

we have ikea cabinets. the old owners had them, so not sure of how easy/difficult the process was. but we like them.

one thing i should note, ours are colored, not wood...so there is like a plasticy coating to them. anyway, i guess all the heat from the stove starting warping one of the designs of the cabinet that is on top of the stove. nothing crazy, but i notice it.

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

Thanks for the insight...we are looking at the ones that are wood, not the plastic coated ones.

Like I said, I don't mind the extra mile when it comes to assembling them...just wanted an idea of if assembly was on par with their other items. Seems like it is, as a PP mentioned that once you get the hang of it, it's easy.

My in-laws are having their entire kitchen done by them on Thursday! You definitely can't beat their prices...they are using them for everything except the floors. They are being installed by Ikea as well so I can'treally comment on the assembly. I'll keep you posted!Chat Icon

We redid our whole kitchen IKEA

I'll take pics for you. The cabinets are about a year old, and our appliances work well.

Hang on... We did have a contractor install everything but we have no complaints.

Our whole kitchen is IKEA. We did not do any of the work ourselves though. We found our contractor through IKEA, and they did a great job and were reasonably priced. It has been just over 2 years, and everything is holding up great!!

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

When I looked for THEIR installation it was $100 per cabinet to put together. I would save the money and do that portion myself. IKEA is not hard to put together. It's time consuming and multiple steps but def. feasable. Especially for $100 per cabinet to put them together.

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

We redid our kitchen with Ikea a few years ago. We hired the contractor they recommended. I wouldn't use them again. Other than that, we LOVE our Ikea kitchen!! I will try to bump my post...

They get great reviews on gardenweb. We would consider them in our next house.

Re: Talk to me about IKEA kitchen cabinets.

My WHOLE HOUSE is furnished by IKEA. From our living room to the bedroom, to the playroom, to the dining room and finally the kitchen. I love their stuff!

We did our kitchen almost 5 yrs ago and I LOVE my IKEA cabinets! They have held up very well and were super easy to install. We installed them on our own. If you can hang a picture, you can hang cabinets! Really, it was that easy!

My advice, put them together yourself, but use wood glue when putting all the parts together (not a step IKEA says, but we always do it with their furniture and it adds an extra layer of durability, IMO.)

It's the best kitchen ever and we did the whole kitchen for under $10k. Cabinets were about $3k, appliances from Sears, another $3k or so, and Silestone countertops and backsplash was another $3k... +/-
