5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
I feel like everyone I mention a 5-point-harness-high-back-booster to looks at me like I have 5 heads. I'm not making this up, right? DD is almost 5 and I'd like to move her to one of these but I don't see much info out there on them. I don't think she'll sit still in a regular booster with the seat belt. I want to get her a new seat for the sitter and my parents and the harness booster seems to be the way to go.
How are they different than traditional car seats?
Do all of them convert to seatbelt boosters?
Any cheap recommendations?

5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
Without going into too much detail... If it's a harnessed high back booster, than it can be used with a 5 point harness until whatever the weight limit is for that seat and then used with the seatbelt after. However, the seats all have different weight ranges. They differ slightly from convertible seats bc those are generally used rear facing when they're younger and then forward when they're a little bigger. The booster can only be used forward facing. How much does she weigh? There are a few seats that go 65lbs with the harness and some go 80lbs! If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

How tall and heavy is she? Depending on her torso height (sitting crossed legged against a wall, measure to the top of her shoulder) she may/may not be close to the max allowed by most.
Remember, if a child is foward facing, the harnesses MUST be coming from above their shoulders (or just at, but NEVER below)

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
I have 2 Britax Frontier 90's (5 PT harness booster that converts to a backless booster). Minimum weight is 30 lbs. I love them. Very easy to adjust and it the last seat I will ever have to buy. The 5 PT harness is the safest seating structure. Most people I know are choosing the high back booster seats that just use the seatbelt to secure the child instead for convience. My 5 year can pretty but buckle her self in though use the 5 point harness so it's not that big of a deal. I just check the strep and position of the chest clip.

We have 2 Britax Frontiers. Both my kids (5 & almost 6) are still in the 5 point harness. They are able to strap themselves in & I strap themselves but I know it's the safest option for them. Eventually I will keep them in the highback booster but use just the seatbelt.

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
I'd like to know more too. I know they go by weight, but at what age do they recommend switching to a 5 point harness from a convertible? We need to buy a second seat for my husband's car, don't want to spend a fortune, & don't want to buy another convertible if we eventually have to get a 5 pt anyway. DC is 22 months & 30lbs. Any recommendations? Was looking at the Evenflo Chase LX. Anyone familiar with this seat?

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
I was in the same position, the convertible carseat that my almost 2 yr old DS was in was going to expire soon (it was my older child's). Since my DS met the weight requirement for the Highback Booster/5 pt harness I went with that. I wont have to purchase another seat for him. I got the Britax Frontier 90 for I think around $250-260. I'm sure there are less expensive Brands for Highback Boosters/5 pt harness, but I really like Britax.
ETS: The recommended age to switch is 24 months because a Highback Booster is unable to be rear facing. Rear facing until at least 2 years old is safest. I switched my DS at 23 months.

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
My 4.5yo is in the Graco Argos Elite 80. The 5pt harness can be used up to 65lbs and the seat belt until 80lbs. I doubt he'll make it to either of these weights because he's only 35lbs now, but I didn't want to have to buy another seat. So many of his friends are already in seat belt boosters and I cringe at the thought...

Me too! My daughter is a "rule follower" and would totally fidget with the seat belt booster, I can't IMAGINE what my son would do when he gets bigger... he's not quite the "rule follower"
Thanks everyone for your input!

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
We moved my DD into the Graco Nautilus when she was 5. I used the 5-point harness on it until just after she turned 6 and then we continued to use it as a high back booster with the regular seatbelt.

5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
We have a Recaro ProSport. DD is 7 and she just hit the height limit for using the 5 point harness, so we switched her to the booster with seatbelt. It didn't fit properly in DH's car, so we had to get her a regular booster seat for his car.

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
A high back booster uses the seat belt.
If you want a 5 pt harness you have to go with a combo seat- which is pretty much harnessed like a regular car seat up to a certain weight- my graco goes to 65 pounds- then converts to a booster- using seat belt.

hmm, the Frontier supposedly can be with the harness from 25-90 lbs? I can't find anything about a maximum height limit.

Re: 5 point harness boosters... what's the scoop?
The frontier has a max overall height limit of 58" inches standing. But, if the straps are unable to come from above their shoulders then it is outgrown as well. It's a "whatever comes forst" situation.
That goes for any foward facing harnessed seat. Standing overall height limit OR weight limit OR when outgrown in torso length (straps can no longer come from above their shoulders)
Nell- how old is your daughter?
