Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

Certain things rust in my dishwasher.
My knives for instance, they even rust if i leave them in the sink.
And the rust does not come off when i wash it.

I also washed a brand new can opener, the one u do by hand, and the entire thing rusted in the dishwasher

Anyone know why this happens?
I am getting frustrated

Oh another thing i noticed, when i wash baking pans in teh dishwasher, when i take them out, rusty water leaks out from the cracks of the pans. I have calphalon baking pans.

Re: Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

This has never happend to me....do you leave them in the dishwasher for a long time or in the sink for a long time? Maybe you should try hand washing the items that rust to prevent it from happening again.

Steel + water = rust. You can't wash rust off because the metal is actually converting to iron oxide.

The only thing metal I would put in my dishwasher is silverware, serveware and the cheese grater. I hand wash my knives, can opener, pans and even my metal colander.

Re: Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

I handwash my pots and pans as well as my knives..I was told specifically NOT to put those in the dishwasher...Calphalon has a new line of pans that ARE dishwasher safe (I got 2 pans on an introductory special and have been afraid to put them in, but I'll get over it..haha) Other than that, I've put in my OXO can opener and not had an issue..?

Re: Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

I noticed my everyday flatware (by Lenox) was getting rust spots when I ran it through the dishwasher... I switched detergents, and it solved the problem!

I now use the cascade liquid.

I have a Jenn Air dishwasher... this one:

Do you by any chance have a Jenn Air also?

Re: Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

No i don't have a jenn air, i have a kitchenaid.

None of my all-clad pots rust, just the knives, and that can opener, and i also have lenox silverware, but they havn't rusted yet.

I actually use teh cascade liquid, that is the best detergent and is the one reccomended for my dishwasher.

If that's the case then you'll just have to buy new items every few months. If that's easier than washing, go for it!

Re: Why do things rust in the dishwasher?

I dont ever put my SS pots in the dishwasher.. but my knives go in and they get rusted. Try using Bar Keepers Friend.. that will probably get the rust off.

I have the same dishwasher I believe and I am noticing my JA Henkels knives are starting to rust. I can't believe it.

I am probably going to call Henkels to have them replaced since they should have a lifetime warranty. But still, they shouldn't rust like that.

I don't put my Jenckles knifes or any of my pots inthe dishwasher-- I bleive the instructions they came with said not to.
I do put my Stainless steel flatwear & our Kleen Kanteens, and neither of those rust.

I did notice rust on my can opener, if those I wash that by hand. Dependign on what I open & if the wheel touched food, I usually just wipe it quickly, rinse it & dry it, but it still rusted after a while.
