Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

It doesn't look like a recall. More like they're scrutinizing them more because people are reporting skin reactions, seizures and deaths.

I actually saw a picture of someone's Lab that had a skin reaction, really gross. The poor dog ran around like crazy trying to rub it off. She washed it off and that seemed to calm the dog. Crazy, right?

Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

Because I keep hearing about issues with Frontline and got to thinking about the chemicals I'm putting on his skin, I looked into more natural alternatives.

I found two main ones - tea tree oil and garlic. The oil would be messy and get all over the place. The garlic, however, sounded interesting.

In another forum I post on, a woman said she uses Bug Off Garlic powder for her dogs, cats and horses for years now. No issues, no fleas and no ticks. I found it here:

Springtime Inc.

And it sounds pretty good. I chatted with her and some others about it who have similar results, and haven't used Frontline in years. The only thing is that garlic is a natural blood thinner, and you would have to get them off it if they were having surgery like for a spay/neuter.

I bought 2 pounds and got another 2 pounds free. It was $30 total for 4 pounds with shipping... I'd pay a heck of a lot more than that if I bought another round of Frontline!

If you're interested, I'll keep you updated on it. We go walking on the wooded paths in Blydenburgh park so I'm sure if he's going to get ticks or fleas, it will be then.

Oh no! I use Frontline Plus on my pup, and have been since August, and I haven't had a problem. I hope that she doesn't have an adverse affect to this substance one day!Chat Icon

I stopped using Frontline when I had kids. My kids climb all over our dog and I never really thought that stuff was safe Chat Icon

I've used Neem Oil in the past and it worked well Chat Icon

Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

i also wanted to add that my frontline is on the list......i bought it last summer and used it only 1 time on my pup...i used it only once b/c i thought it made him sick.....i put it on him and in the early morning hours he woke up with vomiting and diarhea (sp?)....i am not 100% sure that frontline was the cause but i really feel that he had an allergic reaction to it.....that night i had to rush him to the hospital ($$$) and the next day transfer him to my vet....and i asked my vet if it could be the frontline and he said that there are not many reported incidences of cases against frontline...but he didn't rule it out either....so i never put it on him again.....but now i do need something for him this summer since we moved into our new house and it's more wooded Chat Icon

The link says:

"Due to a recent sharp increase in the number of incidents being reported from the use of spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control for pets, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is intensifying its evaluation of whether further restrictions on the use of these products are necessary to better protect pets.

Adverse reactions reported from the spot-on (vials of liquid that get put on the animal) products range from mild effects such as skin irritation to more serious effects such as seizures and in some cases death. Over 44,000 potential incidents associated with registered spot-on products were reported to EPA in 2008. Pesticide registrants are required by law to submit information to EPA on adverse effects resulting from the use of any registered pesticide. The seven products in the table below represent about 80% of that total."

Frontline Plus for Dogs and Cats is on the list.

It's the Thiosulphate that is in both garlic and onion that you're talking about. Onion has a lot of it, garlic has minute amounts and could only cause a problem in severe overdoses.

Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

that is so scary. when I adopted my cat he had very bad fleas and we front lined him as well as our other 2 dogs. No one had fleas and the ones on him were gone in literally 20 minutes. What is just as effective and not this unsafe?

Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

i just posted this on my bulldog forum and a bunch of people added that they had problems w/frontline ( rash, not feeling well, etc.)...i am now totally convinced this is what made my dog sick last summer...i should send fronline my emergency vet bill!!!
anyway, some people suggested garlic (as greenfreak did) ---i have also heard that advantix is better/ok to use???? i am nervous to try it though!

Re: PLEASE READ: RECALLS

We got the Bug Off Garlic yesterday and I put 1/4 of the full dose in his food last night. He WOLFED it down. I think he likes it. Chat Icon

I could smell it on him for about 10 minutes afterwards, but not terribly. If I get in his face and his mouth is open, I can smell it but it's not horrible. Brinkley's mouth always smelled like fish anyway because of his food, so we don't really care about that.

We'll be adding it to every meal, and slowly bringing him up to the 1 scoop a day. At this rate, it will probably take me a year to go through all of it - and it only cost $30. Chat Icon

eta: His last Frontline was 3 weeks ago, and it's not a danger to do both at the same time. I'm going to have him at full strength within a week to "take over" where Frontline left off.

If he gets even one tick, I will let you all know.

you can't use advantix on cats and it's basically got the same list of warnings on the label as front line etc.
