Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
We are just beginning to look for a house. We need someplace where DH can commute to JFK and me to East Hampton.
We saw some new constructions in Ridge and Middle Island but know nothing about those areas. Any ideas?
TIA

I am not a fan of the area Def not a fan of the SD And you have to be careful there are areas that are not good! But if it is new construction maybe it is in a nicer part...

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
Hi, I live in Ridge. Do you have children? how old are they? Longwood has a bad reputation mostly because its racially diverse & most Long Islanders don't like that. I know you said you did some research but I thought you might find this info interesting. 99% of the new construction in Ridge will go to the Ridge Elementary School heres the state report on it-click on the Overview of School Performance In English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Analysis of Student Subgroup Performance link Ridge
Some people in our area choose to send their children to private school since houses(and taxes for the most part) are less. Just like people in Amityville, Freeport & other areas with "not so hot" school districts
Lots of people on this board are from centereach & levittown so I will use them as comparisons. click on the sparks elem. link levittown
click on the Overview of School Performance In English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Analysis of Student Subgroup Performance link centereach
Just some food for though....if anyone thinks I'm offbase & there is a considerable difference in these stats let me know.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
Thanks Kelly. We don't have children yet. We are thinking more in terms of resale. It's more than likely, that DH will be transferred in a few years.
Do you like it there? Is there a town?

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
we are actually in wading river according to maps, but we are in Longwood school district & Ridge fire dept. My area is Lake panamoka which is a unique little community with a private lake owned by the neighborhood in the middle. Its like living in a summer house all year. I shop in wading river which has a little town & we are 10 minutes from riverhead which has everything. My area has a lot of small bugelow style homes that sell quickly because of the lake. There are other areas of Ridge very close by that are more modern developments & there is also alot of "horse country". Home values here have increased at the same rate as the rest of Long island & nice homes listed for reasonable prices sell very quickly. Ridge is not an area that has trouble with resale, regardless of school district. several large communties have been built recently & they all have sold out fast & for more money than anyone ever thought people would pay. I have a son that is in his first year of college & he didn't go to school here(we just moved here in 04) so I'm not biased because my kids go here, I just find it bothersome that people don't look closely enough at the stats before judging a district. Another thing about our district, because the west end has a large low income population-we get tons of government funds, our budget always passes & we have a very high per pupil spending & great programs. here is a listing for new contruction across the street from our lake-there is not much land left in my neighborhood & this house is very big. Looks like it will be beautiful. new house
Good luck in your search!

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
DH and I also live in Ridge - down the street from Kelly I just recently realized (hi neighbor! ). We have been here for about a year and really like it. The location is great (I like being so near all the good shopping in Riverhead- we lived way out east on the NorthFork for a while and though I loved the area, driving such a long way to go shopping got very tiresome.)
We have no childen either, and like you, we were more concerned with resale value, but Ridge has definately been an up and coming area. Something I had looked at on CNN Money maybe 6-8 months ago had actually listed Ridge as being and area having one of the greatest increases in home value. After reading about the school districts, I was/am a little concerned, but a friend of mine does teach in the HS and I questioned her about it. She says she really enjoys it and generally thinks it gets a worse rep then it deserves. That's of course, just one person's perspective though.
DH sister and her family are building a house in Ridge now too and the houses were just beautiful (though I was surprised at how much their taxes may be), but in general, the taxes for the current homes are really not too bad.
Anyway, hope that helps, and if you have any questions, I'm more then happy to help if I can. Good luck in your search!!

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
and to be quite honest.... jsut because Longwood is diverse... THAT IS NOT the reason why people do not like the school... I think that is pretty stupid to even say. Like i said, my DH grew up in the area, went to Longwood... He has told me only BAD things about the school

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
red-did you look at the stats I posted? do you have an opinion on them? Sounds like your DH had a terrible youth, thats too bad. I'd still love to hear examples of how "bad" the school & neighborhood are. I've only been here 1.5 years but I am on the board of directors with the civic association so I get ALL the neighborhood details from 1949 when it was incorporated till now. Pretty average for a blue collar neighborhood as far as I can tell.

I really am not looking to move there so i don't need to look at the stats...
My DH didn't have a troubled youth...Why you would think that is beyond me. But he has told me about how it was going to that school. He has told me about a lot of drug use in the school and the violence... that is and was his experience
I am not going to continue with this you are obviously taking offense...
This is what i have heard from my DH PERIOD.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
well certainly EVERY high school on long island has drug users....unless you have found some secret wonderland that nobody knows about. I grew up in PJS & people from my school always went to 3 village (ward melville) to get drugs because the kids with more money had the good stuff. I think its inappropriate to make blanket statements about homeownership in a particular area based on one persons past experience(I'm assuming your DH graduated a few years ago) without giving any details to support it. I'm not taking offense, I'm trying to get more information from you since you made it sound like my town(you mentioned my SPECIFIC area in your FM) is bad. Wouldn't you inquire?

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
I asked if you read the stats because I posted Centereach as well, I thought it might interest you to see that my district & your potential district rank almost identically(actually mine ranks slightly higher in most areas) and so we agree based on the herion comment that you can't judge a district by one persons experience. I wish you lots of luck in your home search.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
I havent heard such great things about the area and the longwood district.
Just because someone doesnt like the area doesnt mean everyone shouldnt like the area. I live in L-Town actually grew up in the Island Trees district and cant say anything BAD about it

no you can't judge a district on just one person experience... AGAIN, she asked for opinions....SHE will make up her mind and do what is BEST for her....I don't expect her to listen just to me..
IT WAS AN OPINION, actually it was just ONE PERSON EXPERIENCE...
SHE ASKED FOR IT.....

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
Red...I understand its your opinion-what I'm saying is you're claiming you have knowledge of "BAD" things going on here, yet you won't specify. I'm sure WoodIam wants ALL opinions good & bad, I respect that but I don't understand how you expect anyone to care if Longwood has drugs & violence when you don't care Middle country has herion users??? If you are willing to overlook that person's opinion why would you think your DH's opinion about the same thing matters? I'm still trying to get you to tell me what it really is that he felt was so bad. i asked you twice by FM & on here-h e l l if I felt strongly enough to pinpoint "the south side of the lake"(which happens to be where I live) as you said in FM, I'd tell the the whole story to a person that is genuinely asking for specifics. Again I agree with you that everyone is entitled to their opinions/feelings about towns/districts/whatever. And I appreciate your opinion although it would be more useful if you gave specifics, that is your choice. happy house hunting.

Wow hazel...I've never even met anybody that was on section 8 in my 36 yrars of life on LI, maybe you should pick the people you "have known" better. I did hear that this house was available as a section 8 rental though low class house in ridge
The absolute negativity & snobbiness of people on this board really surprises me. I have yet to see anyone here living in Jericho or any other place the TRULY has an excellent school district or any area that actually exceeds a middle class standard of living. I can agree that not everyone "likes" or thinks highly of the same towns but being RUDE after people already said they live there is like saying someones baby is ugly after they posted a picture. I gotta tell you, my "trashy section 8 neighbors on the BAD, south side of the lake" have WAY more class than some of you "ladies". Sorry to hijack your post WoodIam.

I was NOT trying to be snobby. I was just telling about the people I personally know in Ridge. Sorry. These people are my BIL's son, the boy's mother and his half-brother. This apartment complex is not the highest-class place and I think if you are going to spending alot of money on a house, you should know what the town is like around you. Sorry to be telling the truth what would be around her.
