2 year old - night terrors/nightmares?

Twice last night, DS who is 2, woke up possessed like he was Reagan in the Exorcist. Screaming NO NO NO GO GO GO AWAY, throwing himself all over the bed/floor, was utterly inconsolable. He managed to calm down after about 30-45 minutes but it was AWFUL. Not sure what or why this happened - anyone else go through this? Is it a phase? Any tips? It wasn't teeth - this was totally different.

Thanks!

Yes. L did this for a few nights a few weeks ago. We just had to wait it out/stay with him and comfort him. It was exhausting, but he eventually stopped.

Has there been a routine change lately? Anything new? Me going away for a couple nights seemed to trigger L's, and when he was sure I wasn't leaving again they stopped.

Yes, DS went through this when we was 2. Now DD who will be 2 next week has started having them - she actually has had way more than DS did. Last week she woke me up 4 times with them. One last about 40 minutes as well.

There really is nothing you can do.

Thanks - definitely glad to know it's a common thing. No changes that I'm aware of, although he's obsessed with Penguins of Madagascar...maybe it's that LOL

We talked to our doctor about it a bit, and he said night terrors are sadly common but also it could just be them adjusting to dreaming more and what that means, and making sense of dreams.
