1st birthday stress!!!
Help!! I don't know what to do for my son's 1st birthday!! Our families are HUGE and when we include our very close friends we have about 125-150 people, and I just don't know how to keep the cost down when there are so many people to invite. Any suggestions on what you have/would do?!

We have the same problem, just aunts/uncles/cousins (of DH and I) amount to about 120 people, all of our parents are 1 of 7/8/9.
We usually just rent a hall and do heroes/salads from a deli and cake from BJs. Most bang for your buck. We could never do a per person for a reasonable 1st birthday cost.
We only did the 1st birthday big, after that its a kiddie party followed by and grandparents and our siblings/their kids party.
I feel your pain!

We would have had this issue as well so I decided not to have a party. We had a big christening and couldn't justify the extra expense. We do cake with close family.

we had it at a rec room at a local park in our neighborhood...it was really cheap bec it was through Nassau County parks. It was just a one time fee. So much better to do it that way than to pay per person bec we had 80 people (invited almost 100)
The room was huge and they provided the tables and chairs too...i just had to bring in the food and decorations!
Do you have something like this near you in your town?

When is your child's birthday?
I cannot imagine having to spend that kind of money for all of my DC functions (and I say that because thinking ahead if you have this problem now, you will run into it later).
I like the idea of just having really close people over for cake only.
What do others in your family normally do?
This is JMO too, but honestly, I don't think that many people care besides the parents and grandparents if they have to go to a kid's b-day party.

Agreed... I don't feel the need for it... Why put more stress on yourself when it's not necessary? We are taking dd to the Caribbean for her 1st bday... It's also my 30th (yep, same day!) so it's a treat for myself as well... We plan on just having maybe a little BBQ and cake for relatives when we get back.

Agreed. We had 12-15 people over for a simple meal and cake. DH and I made a contribution to their college accounts... 16 years later this will be much more important to their future.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against parties but I think such grand parties for little ones are a bit much for everyone, hosts and guests, considering the economy.

we have a lot of close friends and Im not super close to my aunts/cousins so we limited family to immediate family only and had our friends and their children there, all together it was about 60 people

We also have a huge family. We are two diff religions so I did want to have a big birthday since we didn't have a christening etc. We had 120 people. I rented a room with a bar. Room and tab ran about a thousand. Then catered food and cake another thousand. Then kiddie entertainment and decorations about another 500. We got so many cash gifts for their accounts that I didn't feel we wasted $ we could have put away in savings. We "got back" a lot more than we spent. Plus its a fun celebration and good time for the child whether or not they understand it.

1st birthday stress!!!
dd's baptism had 212 people and her first birthday had 140. Definitely a lot of people, but we have huge families. We were able to keep cost down by doing it at the fire house and catering the food. we hired servers and entertainers...best money spent. even though my dd will not remember thrm, we look back at the parties with great fondness that so many people wanted to celebrate our dd. we will be doing the same for ds.

How many children would be invited? Can you have it at a kids play gym? That way only immediate family and those with kids will likely go. Or would they all want to come any way? Dhs cousin had a 2nd b day and we didnt go and neither did his parents. It definitely cut the list down.

We had a similar issue--- so we just booked Cedar Creek Park and we are so excited about it!!! It's very economical if you can't avoid inviting a ton of people.
We don't plan on doing big birthday parties for every birthday and we would've done this one at the house if not for the storm, so we figured for his first birthday we would make it a big one.

Agree agree. Dont throw a party for the gifts. Throw the party for the celebration. Put the difference in your kids bank account after doing somethign small with close family.

Sorry, the way that I wrote the post came out wrong!! i was rushing when typing before bc I had a lil man on my lap. I am obviously looking to celebrate with everyone-which means family and friends. My husbands friend is flying up from down south to be here and our family members keep asking about it. I am definitely NOT looking for a donation from people and again sorry for it coming out that way! I truly am looking for an easy way for all of our friends and family to get together.
