Re: 16w appointment
I had sonos every two weeks, my baies turned out just fine
I do not seem harm in asking, esp if u had bleeding
I don't understand how u can pressure a doc? U ask either they say yes or no?
I don't understand why it would be a issue

Re: 16w appointment
Of course, but even some with single pregnancies have many
Did not want anyone to get freaked out if they had many sonos
Idk I just don't get why this girl is getting ripped a new one bc she wants a sono?
What is the harm in asking? Doc either says yes or no?

There appears to be some hormonal preggos on the board I totally get wanting to see your LO at your 16 wk appt I'm hoping my doc will do a sono then as well. I figured it can't hurt to ask & if they say no I'll just patiently wait till next time.
It has nothing to do with being hormonal.
I expressed a differing opinion than the OP wanted to hear.
I just don't have the balls to ask for things that I'm not supposed to have - my DR tells me when I get a sono and I say OK. End of story, no matter how badly I want to have a sono.

To me it has to do with not trusting the doctor. I trust that everything is going well and not being greedy (for lack of a better word) about wanting sonos. I trust that my doctor knows what is best and that there are times I get sonos, and times that I don't. I don't know why it's so hard to see it from that perspective, too. I wouldn't purposely make something up to get a sono, which is what I took the OP to imply in her first post. She then added some information that still wouldn't sway me to ask my DR to do a sono.

Re: 16w appointment
I will answer you question without judgment.....At me 12 week appt they were not going to do a sono, but I was super stressed out with Sandy and thinking the worst, a couple of tears and the DR did a quick sono for me... eased my mind. If you had bleeding not too long ago i see no reason not to ask and let your emotions get you what you want! I will say at the 16 week I did not have a sono....

Re: 16w appointment
i dont understand this thread lol
the OP later stated taht she is worried because of bleeding. bottom line, if her doc doesnt typically do a 16 week sono (i did, i had twins, my doc is sono happy), she could ask for one because her worry about the bleeding is valid (also depends on what caused the bleeding and she may actually need a sono to check her cervix, placenta etc). if the doctor says it's not necessary, that means he doesnt have any extra concerns. nbd

Re: 16w appointment
No matter what the OP isn't going to leave her 16 week appt without knowing the baby is ok. Even if it's only the doppler, she will hear the heartbeat. if the dr feels there is a good reason to do a sono, all the better for her.
I personally tried to avoid sonos unless completely necessary, but not everyone worries about that stuff.

Re: 16w appointment
I'm super duper high risk and I won't be getting a sono at my 16 w appointment. I understand wanting to see the baby but I think hearing the doppler and heartbeat helps ease that need a bit. I think asking your doctor for a sono schedule may also be a good idea, to let you know when to expect to 'see' the baby. For me, I wouldn't ask for something that isn't part of the appointment for a couple reasons, but mainly I know the doctors will do what is medically necessary at each appointment, and also requesting or pushing for extra things is one reason doctors are behind and other people are waiting. I would hate to wait an extra 20 minutes because someone else pushed for a sono that was not on the schedule, and I don't want to do that to someone else. If there us cause for concern, express that to your doctor and let them make the decision but I would suggest doing so ahead of time so as to avoid unscheduled extras that cause delays.

This was the statement that made me It almost seemed like she was trying to come up with a reason to give the Dr for a sono and wanted suggestions as to what the reason may be...seems like it was worded strange...

I def see ur side, I am just looking at it from her side. A pregnant perosn who had bleeding and wants a 2 second sono to make herself feel better
I don't think that makes her wrong,or that she is tricking the doc or causing long lines in the waiting room
If it gave a pregnant person peace of mind that would be ok with me
Like if I was behinf her in office and I had to wait and she came out and said sorry I asked doc to give me a sono. I really wanted to see the baby, idk I would totally undertsand and I get some r ok with limited sonos but what's wrong with wanting one??? Idk I am baffled by this

16w appointment
Ok, i'm sorry I even posted this, especially since I rarely start a topic on this board b/c I see girls being ripped for things which are unnecessary. I really didn't mean to cause a huge confrontational post around a sonogram. I went through over a 1.5 years of infertility, IVF and then a huge scare a few weeks ago. I didn't want to come out and state all of this, in my original post but b/c everyone seems to be so judgmental and comments being made about me personally making things up to get a sono, or other things that never came out of my mouth like trying to force the doctor to give me a sono...(thanks to those who were not). Now that that's out there, that is why I really wanted to see the baby w/out stating it in my original post. Sorry for this mess...

I am sure everything is OK. I hope you get the sono -- i'd simply say that bc of the bleeding you are concerned and would like a sono if they can fit it in. No harm, no foul. I find that most OB's are very understanding and will accomodate concerns. I also find that doc's in general will half listen, and dismiss certain concerns. We always need to be our own advocates. I also was in the hospital (ER) a week ago with bleeding and know how scary it is. Dealing with the ER is also a nightmare experience, so it can shake you up. Good luck -- and keep us updated on how it goes.

I agree that this is what caused the confusion. If you think you have a legit excuse you wouldn't have to ask this question. Hopefully your dr agrees to one.
As for the frequent sonos comment, I have one baby and have had a sono almost every week of this pregnancy. So far he only has one head. As for any other effects of frequent sonos I guess we just have to wait and hope for the best
The doctors wouldn't do it if it weren't safe. The effect of me NOT getting frequent sonos is an undetected shortened cervix.. Or restricted blood flow we wouldn't have known about otherwise .. Or a plethora of other things.

I don't think there is any reason to be sorry or give extra info. i don't know why you were given such a hard time on this post but regardless, I hope you get your sono and it definitely doesn't hurt to ask the dr. good luck!

I am having a limited anatomy scan next week at 17wks. When I just have office visits, there are no sonos. Just heartbeat and other normal things. I wouldn't pressure the DR to do a sono unless there's a real reason.
wait...why not pressure him to do it? Also, what would we consider a 'real' reason?
Just as a fyi, i was in the hospital a two weekends ago due to bleeding...should have stated that before. Just want to make sure e/t is ok.
I wouldn't pressure a DR to give me a sono because that's not the kind of person I am. I don't make people do things for me unless I need it. That's just me. I would feel guilty making up an excuse just to get a sono. Do whatever you want.
I'm sorry, did you read my post...this is not an excuse...like i said...i was rushed to the hospital earlier in the month. I'm not 'pressuring' anyone so please don't put those words in my mouth. I asked the question b/c i thought maybe having too many sonos wasn't good for the baby or something...Also, i don't understand the 'excuses'...there is no excuse other than I'd like to see my baby to ensure everything is ok...
They do think that too many sonos can be bad for the baby. there is a reason why insurance only covers 2-3 sonos, one for dating the pregnancy at 8 weeks, one for the ultrascreen at 12 weeks, and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I'm sure you were monitored when you had your scare, and if your doctor feels you're fine I am sure you are.

Re: 16w appointment
I guess it depends on the practice.
At 16 weeks I just heard the heartbeat with a handheld device and a ton of blood work - they did a few results from previously which were fine, just going over that they were fine, and then took some additional blood. That was it for me.
The 20 week appointment is a big sonogram and doctor visit which is next week for me. HTH

You have nothing to be sorry about. I totally get where you are coming from. I had bleeding my entire 1st trimester, i got a sono every week to check if everything is ok. i would be the same way. Pregnancy is scary, and bleeding is scary. i would come right out ask your dr, and explain your fears.
