16w appointment
Quick question about your 16 week visit... I heard that I will not get a sono, they will only check the heartbeat and do bloodwork. Is this true. I really want to see this little nugget Anything I can tell the Dr. to maybe get a quick glimpse?

My OB doesn't do sono's at 16 weeks.
Although, if they can't find the heartbeat on the doppler they will do a quick sono.

My OB doesn't do Sonograms at 16 weeks. They just took blood for AFP test plus the regular weight and HB check.

I am having a limited anatomy scan next week at 17wks. When I just have office visits, there are no sonos. Just heartbeat and other normal things. I wouldn't pressure the DR to do a sono unless there's a real reason.

They probably would have told you that it would be a sono or anatomy scan.

wait...why not pressure him to do it? Also, what would we consider a 'real' reason?
Just as a fyi, i was in the hospital a two weekends ago due to bleeding...should have stated that before. Just want to make sure e/t is ok.

16w appointment
I never had sonograms with the exception of the NT, anatomy scan and at the very end to be sure there was enough fluid because I went past my due date and DS wasn't descending at all.

My docs office has their own sono tech on staff that do the NT, Phase II, etc. I've had a sono at each appt -- 6wk and 8wk internal, 12wk and 16wk external. I didnt think they would know the gender at the 16wk appt but it was obvious it was a on the 3-D. I honestly didnt want to believe her at first but she even printed the pictures that show the "pee pee" haha Not sure if it will also depend on if your sono tech can use 3-D in the office, and how long they have been doing scans. Mine has been doing it 18 years.

I wouldn't pressure a DR to give me a sono because that's not the kind of person I am. I don't make people do things for me unless I need it. That's just me. I would feel guilty making up an excuse just to get a sono. Do whatever you want.

Agreed. As someone who really did have complications at the 16wk sono (I lost my baby 8 days later) please do not make excuses for a sono unless its real!!

I'm sorry, did you read my post...this is not an excuse...like i said...i was rushed to the hospital earlier in the month. I'm not 'pressuring' anyone so please don't put those words in my mouth. I asked the question b/c i thought maybe having too many sonos wasn't good for the baby or something...Also, i don't understand the 'excuses'...there is no excuse other than I'd like to see my baby to ensure everything is ok...

UGH. Do what you want. Give me a break because I don't agree with you
ETA: Don't think you're the only person in the world who likes seeing their baby. I had a MC in September and wish I could my little one every.single.time but guess what, I am an adult and if I am told no sono, I don't make an unnecessary excuse.

Wow ok...i didn't think this was about someone agreeing with me or not. I'm pretty sure every pregnant woman wants to see their unborn child! It was a long road for me to get here and at 12w i was in the emergency room due to bleeding, no need to share war stories b/c this is not what this was about. I don't expect everyone to know my 'story'. Please stop putting words in my mouth...if the doctor tells me there is not a need, I will not push back or fight him so i don't even know what you're talking about.

Re: 16w appointment
some places don't like to give too many ultrasounds. I've gone to a couple of apts where I didn't see the LO. Even when I told my doctor I was a bit stressed that week she didn't give me one. We just check the heart that's all they really want to monitor for now. If you have your anatomy at 20 weeks then I don't think they will give you one at 16. But you can try

There appears to be some hormonal preggos on the board I totally get wanting to see your LO at your 16 wk appt I'm hoping my doc will do a sono then as well. I figured it can't hurt to ask & if they say no I'll just patiently wait till next time.

I didn't get one at 16 weeks and I was bummed.
I don't see anything wrong with wanting to see your LO as much as you can, especially considering your situation.
Just try to stick it out until your Anatomy Scan, that's what I'm trying (impatiently) to do!

This. The standard amount of sonograms is only three. A dating sono, the NT scan and the anatomy scan.
If you are high risk it's a completely different schedule.
Some doctors offices are also just sono happy. I'm glad they dont do a sono at every appt. its just not necessary for me.
But expect the three and that's that. I only got two because we skipped the early dating sono.
Not trying to start anything here but...
"The long term effects of repeated ultrasound exposures on the fetus are not fully known. It is recommended that ultrasound only be used if medically indicated"
You aren't really meant to be seeing your baby every single appt. unless you need to....just have faith your baby is just fine! I can appreciate your concern in this situation and totally express it to them and they'll do what they feel is necessary to check on it.

Re: 16w appointment
With both of my pregnancies I had 16 week sonos BUT I had the sonos because they were checking cervical length due to a procedure I had in the past. I was told the gender both times at these appts and were later confirmed during my anatomy scans (20 weeks)
