Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

I have been seeing a lot of people lately mounting their TV's above the fireplace. We have a flat panel TV and I could potentially mount it above our fireplace (which would make my furniture arrangement SO MUCH EASIER in the room!), but I am just concerned about the angle of looking up all the time to watch...

Do any of you have your TV's above the fireplace? Thoughts?

Also - was it a PITA to run the cable and electric through the wall??????

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

I think I'd be concerned about the heat running through the chimney when the fireplace was on damaging the electronics. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

We just mounted our TV. We havent put furniture in the room yet but you can tilt it downward so that the angle shouldnt be a problem.

As for the heat, is it a brick chimney or metal? If metal, you may need to get new insulation for the wall. If brick, the heat will not be a problem.

We had the wires run prior to putting up new sheet rock. I feel like this would be something that might be difficult to do, but I am not really sure.

Here is a picture of ours.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

We are doing this in a few days. We bought brackets that tilt to make viewing easier.

We may drill holes in the back of the unit to accommodate the wires but we will see when we mount it. We may be able to conceal them another way.

I'll post pics when it's done.

We have a brick fireplace that we don't use.

Well, it's a gas fireplace - so I don't think the chimney would be an issue? Chat Icon

I am so annoyed b/c we built our house and I didn't think to have the electrical and cable brought above the fireplace. At least the wall it is on is an outside wall...

Is your husband handy? It probably wont be that difficult to do. there is something about wiring things that makes me so nervous - like it must be the hardest task in the world. I want to take a class on it just so i dont find it as daunting.

DH is not too handy when it comes to electrical / cable wiring. We know someone who does electrical so I guess we just need to get a list together of everything we want done and call him.

I find electrical scary too... I know someone who was electricuted by his TV! He was okay - but I have been scared of electricity ever since!

yes - i am curious as to why he thinks it will ruin it. we spoke to the people at circuit city and they told us as long as it was a brick fireplace it wouldnt be an issue.... Even if it was a metal chimney, extra insulation could be installed so that the heat wouldnt be a prob.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

We tried it and it didn't work out as well as expected because we have a narrow (13') living room. I felt like I was going to have to see a chiropracter if I kept looking at the TV at such a weird angle. I think if you have a wider room though, it's a great look!

As long as your mantel is 6 inches from the wall, it will completely protect the tv. Chat Icon

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

We just had ours mounted a week ago...

And it wasn't hard at all to do the wiring. I mean we paid someone to do it, but he only had to cut two pieces in the sheetrock. (you can tell where from the picture... one behind the tv and one at the bottom of the fireplace to run the wires into the basement).

Thanks so much for sharing! It looks GREAT (and so does the rest of your house btw!)!! Chat Icon

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the person charge you?

You can FM me if you don't want to post!

Thanks! Chat Icon

It was $800. However, we also had the house prewired (6 rooms total) for when we have some sort of stereo-ipod system set up (surround system).

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

I love the look of plasmas mounted above the fire place. I think it makes the area look clutter free. Although I don't have a plasma or fireplace Chat Icon If I did I would definitely mount it above the fireplace.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

this was just in better homes and garden a month or two ago. they advise against it (they say the TV should be eyelevel), but they said if you do, that your seating should be 3 times the diagnal length of your TV away (so if it's 42" the couch should be 126"/10.5' away)

This is true.... Most people don't see this but if you do this and set your fireplace that high up, you wil be looking up to the tv which depending on your sitting habit, can hurt your body.

Another thing with people doing wireing, you can not run electric wire inside a wall as its a fire hazard (under ny home insurance plolicys). Your plasma/lc outlet should be behind the tv. The wire is different if you are wiring eletric inside the walls.

Re: Thoughts on TV mounted above the Fireplace?

I'm not sure about the heat thing, but I wouldn't do it. I think it looks so tacky - the fireplace is a focal point in the room and putting the TV there just puts even more emphasis on it. Sorry, JMO...

We've had our plasma above the fireplace for about five years and there is no issue with heat from the fire - it draws out, not up.
