11 month old afraid of loud noises....

So my son seems to be afraid of loud noises and Iam worried about him having a sensory issue. Whenever the vacuum is on he cries so DH has to hold him while I vacuum. When my best friend brings her 3 year old over and he is loud like screams or something DS gets scared and cries, same with her dog barking. Today he got a new train toy that makes noise and he seemed to get scared and all of a sudden started to cry and crawl up in a ball on the floor. He usually gets this scared look on his face and then his little lip starts to quiver and then he cries, so he definatly looks scared, so Iam not sure if it's just that or if he has sensory problem. DH thinks he's just being a normal baby, but my best friend thinks I should get him tested. No other sensory issues, loves eating, taking baths, he doesn't love being changed but that's because Iam interrupting his play time, he's a very happy and smiley baby, usually been doing things on the earlier side of normal. I stay at home with him all day and Iam pretty quiet so part of me thinks he's just not used to loud noises but I also don't want to ignore it if it is a problem. Any advice? normal or no? thank you.

I say normal. My DD was always scared of the vacuum, blender, and coffee grinder. She would get the sad face lip quiver and then cry. She's 2.5 and still kinda leery about the vacuum. Chat Icon

She also was terrified of my FIL & my Uncle who are both big guys with deep voices. She's gotten better w/ FIL, but totally melts down when she sees my uncle and clings for dear life to me or DH. (We hardly see him, so she's never gotten used to him.) I've been told it's all normal.

She's a happy, healthy, smart 2.5 year old, so I'm not worried.

strange you say that, when i was a child I was afraid of all men with beards. I was terrified of my neighbor and uncle even though they were both very pleasant, lol.

also, he loves to listen to loud music and dance around so it's not all loud noises...so I hope it's normal. never thought I would be such a worrywart.

DD is very sensitive to noises. She hears everything like an airplane when we're inside or a dog barking several blocks away, the fridge fan turning on and off. Certain noises definitely scare her like the blender, vacuum, hair dryer but as she gets older it's definitely gotten better. As long as she has some warning she's not so bothered although she still sometimes fixates on noisy things (has to watch over while I use the blender and comments on it if it's sitting on the counter until I put it out of sight).

She does get PT and her therapist was the one to first bring it up as a possible sensory thing. Not as anything too concerning but just to see if she has any other sensitivities which I don't think she does. She's not a fan of sand but I think that's pretty normal. I probably was more concerned a few months back but now that I see it easing up some I worry less and hope it will fade completely as she gets older.

DD is 22 months and afraid of certain noises. The vacuum is one of them. She even has a Minnie Mouse toy vacuum which she won't go near. She's also afraid of the NutriBullet, which we use every morning to make her veggie/fruit juice. I've brought it up to the doctor, but she didn't seem too concerned. She said some kids just have more sensitive ears.

Its normal. DD went through a phase. She is still scared of the vacuume and always has been. We still use it. I just tell her its ok and don't make a big deal or give her extra attn. That's what her EI teacher said to do to desensitize her to it.

Its normal..My DD went through this phase with everything from the vacuum, blow dryer, food processor etc. I just kept telling her its okay and didn't make a big deal. She eventually grew out of it.

My son was like that too at that age and beyond. He would put his hands over his ears whenever we were some place loud and get very agitated. His nursery school teacher even mentioned possibly having him looked at for sensory issues, but he was fine with everything else, so I took a wait and see approach. He's 5.5 now and hasn't done the hands over ears thing since he was roughly 3.5. The habit stopped as quickly as it began. So, in my experience, I think it is totally normal.

Still at 3 years old, my DD is sensitive to noises. She was since she was an infant, too. I've mentioned it to ped but she isn't concerned because she doesn't appear to have any other sensory issues. But then again, DD loves music and has no problem blasting her favorite songs in the car and had no issues at the FBB concert. And she can be VERY loud herself. But if she hears a plane in the sky or or a distant fire siren, she's freaked out. I recently took her to a magic show at her school. She liked it, but at one point told me, "Mommy, the kids are so loud."

My nephew hates loud noises even at the age of 5. Kid hates to be sung happy birthday too. No sensory issues just is sensitive. I notice my 11m old is Leary of the vaccume. She just stares at it.

11 month old afraid of loud noises....

My dd hated HATED loud noises she would cry and cling to me for dear life and be terrified. Loud voice, vacuum, loud trucks/cars, trains... You name it she was terrified. Then around 12-14 months she outgrew it. Now she chases the vacuum and tells me to get her with it LOL

Only sometimes when something suddenly gets loud and it startles her does she ever cry, but I get that cause it will make me jump...
