Re: ....

I didn't read the original article or any other threads on this, so excuse me if I'm repeating what anyone else has said, but I think the major point being overlooked is that there is clearly enough consumers willing to go out and shop on Thanksgiving, which I find the bigger problem. We've clearly lost something as a society if a deal is so appealing that we will forgo our family time. So it's a two way street. If consumers didn't go out shopping on a holiday, the stores wouldn't bother to open.

There are hospital workers, law enforcement....many people have to work on Thanksgiving. Why does everyone freak out if retailers are open? People are getting holiday pay and a dinner. Most people need it. Jmo

OMG are you serious!? My DH is a retail manager he does NOT get overtime or holiday pay and doesn't get to pick whether he works or not...he has to end of story. Police, nurses, doctors, etc are ESSENTIAL workers. Getting a deal on a flat screen is not essential.

Exactly!!! Chat Icon

I've worked in "essential" positions and most employees get holiday pay. I've also worked in retail and got NOTHING extra- no holiday, no overtime, nothing. I don't
know why you assume retail stores give holiday pay,
because most don't!!!!!!!!!!! They are 2 very different things
IMO. How can you even compare?!?!

I have no sympathy, im sorry, i just dont. In this day if you have a job, a warm home and you can afford a turkey...you should be thankful just for that. I'm honestly tired of seeing so many posts full of people whining about working holidays in retail. My dh works every day 24 hrs a day. We travel with a laptop everywhere we go along with his work phone. I rarely hear him complain...We are just happy to have a job. Retail workers aren't the only people who have to work. Gas stations, fast food, food markets, travel, hotels.....

To clear up Walmart not paying living wages...Walmart pays almost 9$ an hour starting day shifts and almost 11$ an hour evening shifts. Walmart also pays time and half on Sundays and double time for holidays! They also offer a great Cadillac benefit plan. They offer more money per hour then BJs! Kohls, waldbaums and shoprite!

The fact they they are offering a turkey dinner is amazing. Since I know for a fact that there are many people who simply couldn't afford a turkey anyway. Happy thanksgiving

the fact of the matter is that I WOULDNT be able to afford anything on retail salary!!!!!!!!! What do you think they pay their employees?!? I hardly think $9 an hour is enough to cover the bills!!!!! Are you kidding?!!

What you are failing to see is that many other companies pay their employees even less than that. Daycare workers, the ones that take care of infants ALL day, typically make less than that an hour. There are SO many businesses that pay their employees a low wage. So many. Not just Walmart.

Daycares aren't owned by multimillionaires who rake in millions in profits each year and cut employee hours so they don't have to pay benefits.

ETA: I was an infant teacher in a daycare for several years, made more than $9/hr (not much more but still... and that was 6 years ago), and we were off on holidays including the day after Thanksgiving w/ pay. Just saying..

If you go on Craig's List, you will see how much daycare workers make, at very popular chains. It seems much hasn't changed in that industry in 6 years. The point is, they still don't pay a "living" wage to their employees, like the other poster was saying about Walmart. In addition, many do not provide benefits to their employees.

Great point- Walmart is always lauded as an excellent business model because it provides low prices and makes such awesome profits but people overlook the fact that many of their workers need some kind of public assistance.

I don't think it's overlooked. Someone else in the thread stated it very well. They are the largest employer in the US, the jobs are menial, and require no education. They get paid accordingly. Of course many of their workers are going to receive public assistance. Just like many fast food workers, daycare workers, pre-school teachers, etc. etc. etc.

Yup. And Walmart has made it publicly known that they have no issues hiring seniors, disabled, special needs, etc. think about what other employers are going to hire these groups. Especially seniors. Some seniors don't want to just sit home after being retired. Some can't afford to. When you get older, your pool of available jobs tends to shrink due to age discrimination.

For a company that puts two million Americans to work, I applaud them. If they only offered full time shifts, that would likely eliminate most seniors and it would probably reduce the number of jobs available. It would also reduce profits which could lead to locations closing. It's catch-22. If you want full time, you should probably look elsewhere.

For those of you who think Walmart is so wonderful, try and watch the documentary called "The High Price of Low Cost". It's disgusting. I have never set foot in a Walmart and never will.

I saw it. I wasn't blown away by it. I take ALL documentaries with a grain of salt. Every documentary out there, regardless of the subject matter, is made with a specific agenda in mind and they will spin whatever information they have as needed to get their point across. As most documentaries are, I found it to be very bias and one sided.

And for the record, I have no Walmart love............I actually don't even shop there. I like Target. Chat Icon

This recent study was pretty eyeopening as well. I also refuse to give a dime to Walmart. If anyone else wants to, feel free. But I stand by my decision to never shop there.

Last I checked McDOnald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Gas Stations and so on all pay minimum wage. Where's the outcry for the waiters and waitresses that make under $3 an hour and rely on tips? I understand Walmart is evil in a lot of ways, but the reality is they do employee a lot of people who otherwise would need a job and would need complete assistance. Just because you need help from the gov. doesn't mean you are using all the benefits either. I know a lot of people who need help and have "good" jobs. CNA's for example. It's all about perspective, and family size as well. For someone with little to no education, a disability or who is older there isn't a lot to choose from. Plus Walmart has cheap prices. I understand why, but when you are living on a small budget that is what you do. You shop at Walmart or other places where you can get stuff you can afford.
