That would never fly where I work, parents would not allow it. I have heard of this being done in other districts though . . . . I do not think the parents should supply the classrooms . . . especially not in your district- they are fine when it comes to the budget.

Is she just asking or is it required...I used to put a wish list out for parents who WANTED to donate items...
Although my DHs little brother is in 5th grade and his teacher asked him to buy dry erasers , however i saw most of them in his book bag...not sure if he has to give them in

The only time I have ever heard of donations are for things that the students use.
For example, I used to give free homework pass if they brought in a box of tissues as I was spending about $80 of my own money each year on tissues... cartons of them. All of the donated tissues were used by all of the kids in the room.
I have to purchase my own dry erase markers and they are expensive. While I'd love someone to buy them for me I wouldn't ask the students to donate them... not appropriate.
Does the school administration know about this?

I teach 1st grade and we ask the parents to purchase a pack of dry erase markers. They all go into community baskets and are used during centers, math and lots of other activities. I've haven't had anyone complain yet and they are put to good use. The school won't supply them and I have spent so much money buying supplies for my rooma nd I just can't afford it anymore.

That's really a bit much. I wouldn't DARE ask my students to bring in that much for the purpose of donating to the class. Whatever happened to out of pocket expenses for teachers? When I first started six years ago (and years thereafter), I spent hundreds of dollars to build up my repetoire. Never did I ask students to buy supplies like that.

very ballsy. Is this a tenured teacher? It seems as though this may be a new teacher who doesn't know how to act. She may think that all teachers do this, but we sure as he--ll don't.

I would never ask the parents to do such a thing. If one class of kids can buy markers for themselves then all the kids should be able to. The school should have more than enough $$ to buy supplies for itself, and the teachers may even get a small stipend to get things of their choosing (we get this in NYC)
ETA- that teacher sounds clueless.

In my school we were told it would be a good idea to have a wish list where parents can dontate-we do not get stipends-our school/district does not buy these things for us.
I didnt have a dry erase board so it was never on my wish list-however other teachers did put it on there and saves some money for the teacher who in our school have to buy the items out of pocket!

OK, I didn't realize she already had her own marker, eraser and wipe board. Then yes, it is definitley over the line to ask for that package. I thought it was just markers and she supplied the boards (which is what I do).

Really inappropriate. Assuming there's at least 20 students in the class (and I'm sure there's more) - that's 140 markers to the teacher - from one class!! What the heck is the teacher going to do with all of those?

I agree with Jamie. If each child only has 1, what happens if they don't have it on them that day, or if that one runs out? Heck, half of my students can't remember to bring a pencil to class, so I can kinda see where the teacher is coming from. What if a child doesn't have their marker on them a day they are needed??? Do they just sit out?
I totally agree that 7 extra is a bit overboard though.

Ditto. Same goes with glue sticks and sharpies. First of all, little kids glue and color EVERYTHING so there is that reason, but also, by December, if not earlier, 1/3 of the class has lost dry erase markers and about half of the other supplies.
