Likelihood of twins...
Next year dh and I will be TTC, and we just found out a tidbit of information... My dh's paternal grandmother was a TWIN! (don't ask why they never knew this, I'm not sure myself!) His brother's wife just found out she's PG with twins, and we're thinking that twins run in his family.
MY QUESTION TO YOU IS is there any chance that TWINS runs in his family (they were fraternal twins) AND will I have a chance with having twins myself? I'm not sure which side of the family carries the genes for twins...
TIA!!! (sorry if this is a silly question - I figured I'd ask the experts!)

Donna is correct.
What many people don't realize today is that 60% of all twins are due to fertility treatments.
I always chuckle when people ask me if twins run in my family. They do but in my case they are a product of the RE's office

Re: Likelihood of twins...
That's weird though... three people I spoke with in the last week or two SWEAR that both sides could contribute to the likelihood of having twins... I don't get it...

Re: Likelihood of twins...
It is all the woman for fraternal twins. She drops two eggs in one cycle. Nothing about the man's side can affect that.
Identicals are purely random

Nope it is the woman's side of the family. We were happy about that b/c not ready for twins and DH's grandfather was a twin.

It has to be through your mother's line. If you mother was a "super ovulator" there is a likelihood that you will be as well. Dad's family has no effect on a woman's ability to ovulate one or more.

Re: Likelihood of twins...
thanks Theresa! I think she may have twins also distantly in her family.
As for being a super ovulator....this PG was an oops and all it took was ONE TIME we slipped up.....so I guess my new name needs to be fertile myrtle

Re: Likelihood of twins...
There are many misconceptions about twins. One lady told me she was carrying identical boy and girl twins but she lost the girl. Ummm, how can a boy and girl be identical. Last time I chekced my parts were different then my husbands parts.

I have many twins in my family. All four grandparents were twins. Nope...no twins for me. But the morning sickness was severe enough to be having triplets

Tell this to my in-laws!!! They do not get that DH had nothing to do with producing twins!!!!! I tell them over and over, but its no use. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with me. Makes me want to scream!!!!

Re: Likelihood of twins...
I think it depends on the maternal side. If you drop two eggs.
Identical twins can happen to anyone.
I had twins on both my husband and my side. So I am not really sure where it came from.

Re: Likelihood of twins...
We have 4 known sets of fraternal twins on my moms side. There are no twins on my father's side. Some skip generations and some dont. I was also told that a woman's age can be a factor too - that the older you are the higher your chances are for conceiving twins. DH also mentioned an article on dairy intake as well.

Re: Likelihood of twins...
My grandma had two sets of twin boys right after one another -her 3rd and fourth children were identical (my dad and his brother) and 5th and 6th babies were fraternal boy twins. . . and she then went on to have babies number 7 and 8!!!!!
one of the fraternal twins went on to have a set of twin boys years later. Identical twins are just by chance.

Let's sit ours down together. My MIL has identicals as siblings and loves to mention it!

I actually read on babycenter (this poor confused, attention-starved girl) she said that in her ultrasound that her boy twin had his penis in her girl twin!!! People were all over that they have to have separate placentas!

Re: Likelihood of twins...
Just to clear something up.
From everything I have read it is only on the mother's side. THE MOTHER OF THE BABY, not from only your mom.
If my father was a twin, that means that his mother could have passed it on to me. Passed thru the mother is the one giving birth, not the pregnant person's mother.
If your father is a twin you can have twins. If your husband is a twin it means nothing, except you have in laws that will think it is becuase of them.

I have actually read a lot of the opposite...thats its only the Maternal genes that carry the trait that leads to twins( which is super ovulation).....
If your Dads mom had the trait...it would NOT be passed on to HIM because hes a man....It would only be passed on to a female child.
So Only Mothers , and grandmothers can pass the twin trait( super ovulating) to their daughters.
Its not a gene or anything that causes Twins in a family....Its the women ovulating one more then one egg at a time, which can be a one time occurence, caused by Fertility meds or heridetary from the mother.
ETA_ You can also have boy/girl identical twins....They are called monozygotic twins ....When the egg has an extra x chromosome...it can result if split in a boy and a girl....although this is rare Identical means the same genes and same placenta....Doesnt mean they always look in the end 100% alike....
