If you overheard your manager talking to another manager about your friend at work and disciplinary action would you give that friend a heads up?

Not giving specifics but just that they may talk to them?
This friend has already told me about the issues they were having with these managers.

I wouldn't say anything. You heard it 2nd hand and things can get blown out of proportion that way.

It depends on how you heard about it. Did the managers tell you? Do you have access to the persons files (HR role)? If there is no way they can trace it back to you maybe. But if you tell the friend then you risk the friend maybe acting out on it prior to what the managers had planned. Then they may suspect a rat somewhere.

Depends. If you know they won’t rat on you I would say something.

The managers also deserve to be called out on discussing these matters where others can hear. Extremely unprofessional.

i completely agree about this...

but i would not say anything.
you don't know if something might change and nothing will come of it or if the friend might do something wrong with the information.

This is what I am afraid of. Personally I kind of feel like saying something to the managers who were discussing it and telling then that is should be discussed confidentially.
Other people not part of our team heard as well.

I’m normally in the “let it go” camp, especially at work but this is just blatantly unacceptable. I don’t know what OP’s friend did to warrant disciplinary action but I can tell you that discussing staff concerns in front of others is absolutely cause for disciplinary action in and of itself.

Quite honestly, I think it would be great for it to get back to them that the friend already knew. Maybe then they would learn to shut the office door.

Funny you say shut the door- in this cr@ppy building I work in the walls are made of papier-mache! When I am on confidential calls I have to take my space heater, turn it up on high fan, and put it up on my desk in between me and the wall my desk faces to make white noise so my voice isn't heard outside.
Because even with my door shut you can hear EVERYTHING!
And they have my employees (and some others) sitting literally right on the opposite side of that wall.
The set up is awful for confidentiality.
They can't have managers sitting in offices with paper walls. But they do.
I have had to take my cell phone and go outside for an OUNCE of privacy on a business call.
Ridiculous.

This manager and I sit in cubicles next to each other. Instead of going into a conference room he decides to discuss this person and the issues out at his desk for everyone to hear. The employee is in another office but people in our office work closely with this person. I am not the only person who heard the conversation

Are you a manager? If so then I would talk to him and let him know. Otherwise I would tell my manager if I had a good relationship that I overheard a conversation where x was discussing issues with a specific employee and everyone could hear. I wouldn't go into details or give the employee name.

I would never tell the friend because that can be a detriment to your career.
