job search question

Not sure if anyone remembers a previous post of mine (how to deal with a horrible boss), but I work for a horrible person. The latest is that I got written up for "bad handwriting"!! Chat Icon Anyway, things have been a little better since a new co-worker started b/c we make fun of the boss all the time, but I'm still trying to get out of here.

I've interviewed many times but it always seems to come down to them liking me personally, but hiring someone with direct experience. I've interviewed for 2 places recently and I'm waiting to hear back.

My WWYD question: one of the jobs is at the hospital as a program coordinator for the fellowship program in Pediatrics. I've always worked in higher education, and only recently worked on the healthcare side of higher ed. I've found that working for drs and nurses have been by far the worst jobs b/c they treat administrative roles horribly. In this job, I've already met with one group and they want to bring me back for a second interview, but they're having trouble wrangling everyone's schedule to find a time to meet (which would mean I would be in a take it or leave it situation with the time) - and also reiterates how frustrating I would find it working with drs. I feel stuck - do I still take the interview so I can get out of my current horrible situation or continue to hold out for something I won't find so frustrating? I've been actively looking for work since April and only recently have there been more positions being posted at a specific university.

I would go if you think having this experience might open up doors in the future. You have already been written up and if I remember correctly your manager has had issues with you in the past. Just all around seems like a toxic relationship. Even if you were offered this other position doesnt mean you have to stop looking either.

I work in healthcare and I’ve always been good to my admins....

You say this is a fellowship coordinator role, which sounds to me like it’s not very doctory for lack of a better word. You would probably deal with fellowship applications, recruitment, etc. It actually sounds like the perfect transition from higher ed to healthcare because it’s a little of both.

But yes, doctors are crazy busy and hard to pin down to do anything. If this is something that would be a big issue for you then it may not be the best fit but if you’re looking to expand your resume I would encourage you to look past their busy schedules.

I agree. You got written up for bad handwriting. That's crazy. I would take anything just to get out of there. If it was me, I would be afraid of getting fired for any ridiculous reason and then having to explain that in an interview. It could make it even harder to get a new job. JMO of course.

Go on the interview! A fellowship coordinator usually works directly with the candidates applying for fellowship and the current fellows so I cannot imagine they will treat you poorly. In my experience the fellowship coordinator is someone to be very kind to- I cannot believe you were written up for your handwriting- this should be addressed directly with HR. Your boss sounds like she is grasping at straws to try to fire you

Ok - a bit of a vent. The position I'm interviewing for in Pediatrics isn't a high level position - it's Program Coordinator. Usually I have a phone interview and come in for an in person interview. Rarely has it gone to a second in-person interview.

However - this freakin' job! No phone interview - straight to an in person. Which is fine - but now they want another in-person (tomorrow). Then I find out yesterday that the want another in-person on Thursday. So that's 3 in-person interviews - each of which I have to take off work. Then today they email and ask me for my references (even though I've only met them once). When he thanked me for sending references, he casually mentions that there might be another in-person, but he'll let me know.

Um..... WTF?! See - this is already turning into a pain in my ass - exactly what I was afraid of. I wrote back and said it's really hard for me to take off work so many times and it would be great for them to combine with one of the other 2 times I'm already scheduled to appear.

Sheesh - it's a relatively lowish position - probably doesn't even pay $50K.

Ask to meet before or after work or on your lunch break. They should be considerate if they know you’re employed. Anyway this means they’re very interested in you.

My first job out of college at a major academic medical center was 5 in person interviews. Pay was less than $50k. When I used to hire at the same hospital, it was AT LEAST 3 interviews. What you describe is not at all uncommon for the field.
