work place issue

This happened at my office earlier this year. The building had to shut off their water for the day. We were closed, employees that were able to telework did, those who couldn't did not but were not penalized.

I think its absolutely insane that they would remain open. No water is a health hazard.

Here is what osha says:

https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/restrooms_sanitation/

"Employers must maintain restrooms in a sanitary condition. Restrooms must provide hot and cold running water or lukewarm water, hand soap or similar cleansing agent and warm air blowers or individual hand towels (e.g., paper or cloth). Waterless hand cleaner and towels/rags are not adequate substitutes for soap and water."

Interesting.
Sadly many employers feel they are above following OSHA rules and figure nobody will dare report them

I would report them lol. I'm like that though.

For one day??
So it’s a small company, you report them, they get fined, and then nobody gets a year-end bonus to offset the cost of the fine.
Doesn’t seem worth it.

Year end bonus? What's that? Chat Icon
We've never been fined by OHSA, but we never get a year end bonus! Damn!

In my office they would tell us just to work from home.

I hate porta potties!!! And I don't use them unless I really had no choice. I would not be happy. Are they the blue ones? Those are the worst. However they do make some that are not that bad and actually kind of look like regular bathroom. If its those I wouldn't care as much!

Yes the ones in the trailers are just like real bathrooms, and usually have sinks also. They have those on Governor's Island

the office building we are in was told there will be no water on the whole street tomorrow.

we are an office of 50 people in a 4 floor building.

this morning, i saw them unloading 8 port-potties for the whole building.

if you were the owner, what would you do?

make your workers go out in the cold, to use a porta-potty, or just suck it up and close for the day?

Close for the day unless you were a major essential employee because without water, how are you washing hands in this porta-potty?!? I would be calling in sick if you were open!

I can't believe someone would report their employer for ONE day without water/bathroom when their were accommodations made

The accommodations made are not adequate. They are required to provide running water. If they were doing things as required, there would be nothing to report. There is a reason these types of regulations are in place. It's because if there weren't, who knows what employers would try to get away with.

I would suck it up and use the porta potty for one day. I am sure they are clean enough. It would be different if there was no heat in the building.

Then prior to reporting them I would make them aware of this policy and ask that they get the trailer porta potties that have running water.

I'm the opposite, I can deal with no heat for the day and wear a coat. I actually did for a few hours at my job and it did suck. But I could not do the porta potties and no water.

It's funny how everyone has their own tolerances and how different they can be.

Re: work place issue

I've used porta potties (the plastic ones, not the fancy trailer ones) that had "running water". There was a foot pump and a sink, so you could definitely wash your hands.

I also bet there are loopholes for temporary use, just like the construction site differences. For construction sites, you don't need running water. Hand sanitizer is OK according to the OSHA rules.

I'm not saying it's something I would want to deal with, just that it's probably not something that you can file a complaint with OSHA about.

I would work from home, but I can do that at my job.

We have some Petty Patty's here! It's one day - if you are that inconvenienced and can't function then I'd just call out sick and be done with it.

Yes there are worse things in the world but why do I have to deal with that unless that was part of my job.

I would, in a heartbeat. A port a potty is not an acceptable accommodation. It seems to be against the law to operate a business without running water/bathrooms.

My office woud probably close & work from home as we did when we got new carpeting over the summer.

We were open with no heat in the past though, but fewer peopel could work form hoem then,a nd that was a differnt boss.

I sit near the bathroom here, and it gets a lot of traffic. Not just a mid-day pee break.

Also, if you a pregnant or have your period, that has to be extra- annoying.

I was implying a job as a construction worker, police officer, or park ranger lol, where this would be the norm.

As for the "not my job", if you are referring to the other thread - I don't believe in outright saying "its not my job" but I am a firm believer in pushing back at work if you need too. There is nothing wrong with saying No at work (within reason of course).

We had a recent thread about this.... having indoor plumbing and running water doesn't mean you don't have piss and sh!t all over the bathroom... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just did a quick Google search. The really nice trailers are between $1000 and $3000 for a day, depending on # of stalls and extra features.
Porta potties are approximately $200 per day.

8 plastic porta potties are roughly $1500 for the day. A 6 toilet, 2 urinal trailer is roughly $2000 for the day.

I would think a company of this size could spring for an extra $500 so their employees could have some comfort.....

Re: work place issue

It's one day, I'd use the porta potty.

I would not report my employer for something completely out of their control. There will be no restrooms, so they are bringing in adequate restrooms for the day. They aren't asking you to "hold it" or go to the McDonald's down the street. Use purell to "wash" your hands. And lets be honest... we're lucky if 50% of people actually wash their hands after using the bathroom.

Ofcourse the bathrooms can be unsanitary as I used public bathrooms before. But you should be able to flush it, where as porta potties you don't. Im talking about the regular small ones.

I just really hate porta potties as you can tell & had a traumatic experience when I was little. Trust me, my DH makes fun of me all the time. The lengths I have gone through to not use them is insane.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

LOL we used to go to an outdoor concert every year in a state park and they had porta potties and me and my cousin always chose to go deep in the woods to pee.
It was cleaner!

LOL!

During my Sparta races, I have peed in the woods to avoid them as well. One runner warned me there might be poison ivy and it was a risk I was very willing to take.
