walking distance?

how far would you consider something to be "within walking distance?"

i'm putting together an event for work and i need to pick a hotel that had restaurants within "walking distance."

8-12 minutes with sidewalks. If no sidewalks, then it is not ok.

to me, walking distance is somewhere i can get to on foot in about 5 minutes or so.
And it has to have a decent, safe way to get there- (i.e.- sidewalk, not walking along a busy highway, etc)

thanks for the replies. it helped me to look at the hotels using the satellite view to make sure there are sidewalks.

So when we went to Cape May, parking at the hotel was scarce so once we parked, DH didn't want to move the truck and lose his good spot. lol

So the hotel gave us a list of restaurants that were "walking distance" and all were within a 5 minute radius.

Now we decided to venture to the main part of town for most meals and that was a mile walk. Yes, we walked it, and yes, my DD and I complained about it.

So yes, technically you can walk a mile to breakfast or dinner, but ideally no.
Especially if you are dressed up for dinner, in heels, etc

I've always said "everything is within walking distance if you walk long enough"

I would say 5 minute walk. 1/4 mile maybe a bit more.
depends also on where you are as well, and why the restaurants need to be within walking distance. Is it so a large group can go to a restaurant? or just so people can go on their own if they feel like it.

In Boy Scouts, we did a 20 mile hike, so now I tell all of the boys that it's "within walking distance", if it's 20 miles or less...

I also don't want to have to wear a sensible shoe to dinner. I want to rock my 4 inch heels and that has a 5 minute walk limit. Dragging a change of shoes is annoying.
I'd just hop in an uber though.

For most people, somewhere around 5-10 minutes is considered “walking distance”

I’m not most people...I will walk for waaaaay more than that, happily.

There is a difference between a hike and a walk. I've done 20 miles in a day. She did not ask for a hike. She asked for a walk.

I’d say half a mile absolute tops if you’re addressing it to a wide audience. Less than that, under 5 minutes ideal. You don’t know everyone’s conditions.

For this managers event, I went with places within two city blocks with sidewalks. I gave another list for places farther away, for the "abventerous" type... starbucks, target, and in-n-out.

5-10 minutes. Like others said, I am active so I would be willing to walk more, but would not want to do so in nice clothes.

To me walking distance is, across the street, a block or two down from the hotel, an easy walk. I guess a walk like that would take 5 min.

A mile.

Yes, technically, 5 miles or more can be walked but when I say that I am looking for let's say restaurants "within walking distance," then I mean that I would like to walk no more than a mile to get to them.

On a beautiful 70 degree day, not too dressed, up a mile is fine.

For this though I would say more like across the street/a block or two away. What if it’s raining/are the people going to be tried from traveling etc?

For most people probably half a mile.

Realistically, I think 5 minutes or so is "within walking distance". For most people, a mile is much too far. Half a mile is probably on the edge of OK.
