musty towels
Yesterday morning, I threw in a load of 8 towels & some washcloths. Then, life happened and we were out all day with kids, and I totally forgot about it. This morning, I go to throw in a load of the kids laundry and... It stunk to high heavens!! It was rancid. I ran the load, TWICE more, on hot, with a full scoop of Tide powder, a 1/2 cup of borax, and the Gain scent beads. They smell nice coming out of the wash, but out of the dryer they still reek of mildew. I would hate to have to throw away all of that...any suggestions?

Re: musty towels
Leave the towels out to dry in the sun. Then, divide the load in half, and wash again with tide and oxyclean. Dry in the dryer.

musty towels
Thanks, ladies! I am going to ask my nanny to rewash them, 1/2 at a time, with just vinegar, tomorrow, and then hang dry them. When I get home I will run them through with just the Tide powder and then dry.

Re: musty towels
I would do vinegar and baking soda.
Do you have a front loader? This will also clean out the front loader. And always leave the door open on a front loader when it’s not in use.

Re: musty towels
I wash everything with vinegar in the rinse cycle. It makes everything smell better and seem cleaner.

Does your washer smell? If so do a vinegar bath with hot water before rewashing towels. Then take half and wash with vinegar and repeat with next load. That is the worst smell.

musty towels
Between camping, the pool, the beach and kids leaving them on the floor, my towels take a beating in the summer First wash towels in hot water using a cup of vinegar only, no detergent. After that cycle is done, run again with hot water, 1/2 cup baking soda, no detergent. Then dry completely in the dryer or in the sun. Be sure they are dry before putting away. Don't put vinegar and baking soda together with clothes in a washing cycle, it will bubble over!!

I’ve never had this happen. There are good tutorials online about this. But again, I use it for a front loader.
What I would do is take out the clothes/towels, do a baking soda vinegar wash (If you have a front loader), then throw the towels back in and wash with vinegar. I’d probably wash them again with detergent after that.

Thank you for all of the advice! I split the towels into 2 loads, washed on hot with just vinegar, then without drying washed them again with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Dried them outside, then rewashed with Tide. They smell fresh and clean! For those who asked, we have an HE top loader.

If it ever happens again you can use white vinegar and baking soda together. I do a cup of each and let them soak for an hour or two during the cycle. Then I rewash with detergent and then dry. I also have an HE top loader.

Re: musty towels
Do u have a front loader? I have one and I always forget towels. Last week I had to wash them 4 times in one day because I kept forgetting. When I had a top loader, they never stunk. I seriously hate my machine

Stupid question... where do you put the vinegar? In the drum of the machine or where the liquid detergent?

For a front loader I put it in the place where you put your detergent. Those things are a pain to open after you have started the cycle.
For a top loader I’d let it fill up a bit and just throw the vinegar in. I’ve never used the Detergent thing for a top loader. It all gets tossed around anyway.

Wash them again with vinegar in the cycle
This then wash with regular detergent
This, but make sure you use hot water and then put them in the dryer for 70 minutes.
