Waxing the Upper Lip area

So my DD ( 6th grader) is extremely self conscious of some upper lip hair that she has - I can barely see it but according to her the boys at school make fun of her for it and it really upsets her.

SO she wants me to remove it.

At first I was hoping she would forget about it and move on but she comes home from school every day and asks me if I have a plan!!

So I have done some online research and the majority seem to lean toward waxing for this age and area to be waxed.

Do you think I could do it for her with those Sally Hansen strips?

Any other advice - my friends all have younger kids or have blonde kids so this is not an issue for them.

Thank you!!

My niece is part Portuguese so she has thick black hair and is hairy. My sister has her bleach it, she’s very pale.

Re: Waxing the Upper Lip area

If you are going to wax it, go to a waxing place. Like European wax. They use a special type of wax that hurts a lot less and comes off without the use of additional cloths. Nail salons use a harder wax and then cloth to rip it out

I wouldn’t use at home waxing strips. They don’t really take it all off and if you google - some people hurt their skin bad with them.

Better to make it a positive experience

I've personally had success with sally Hansen wax drops that you rub between tor palms but it does hurt. The bleach can look obvious. Have you thought about those personal battery operated razors

I highly recommend the battery operated hair removal tools. You can get it at bed bath & beyond. I use it on my upper lip...no pain, so quick!! I put moisturizer on right after & the redness goes away in a few minutes. I feel like waxing at that age would be traumatizing!

Re: Waxing the Upper Lip area

I’ve never had to deal with much hair anywhere for some reason and my family is from Southern Italy.

That being said, I would get it done somewhere. There is no way I would do that on my own or to someone else. I’ve heard really good things about sugar waxing.

I agree with going somewhere. It takes 2 seconds for a professional to take it off and it will hurt alot less. I'd hate to try some at home product and have it not work or hurt her. If she is that self conscious and something simple can be done about it, I'd totally do it.

I also vote for European Wax. They are so lovely and they will be very compassionate and sweet to your daughter. I think if this is an issue for her you should definitely make sure you do it professionally and she will feel so much better! I have a lot of facial hair so I understand.

I agree, I use the same. They have small ones specifically for facial hair. So quick and she can keep up with it herself. I even use it to touch up my eyebrows.

I’m a baby’s and don’t do waxing lmao. The upper lip hurts like hell lol. I use a similar thing I’ll post below. I ororgaklu got it from Avon years ago then replaced it with a drug store one. The Avon was better but this one is good. https://www.target.com/p/philips-174-women-s-precision-perfect-electric-trimmer-hp6390-52/-/A-50699701

My DDs started with using a creme hair remover we did at home for the upper lip and uni-brow area. I also got them a small battery operated hair remover and my DD uses that for facial and arm hair sometimes too. Even though they are young I didn't want them to be self conscience

Yes I was going to suggest a Nair type thing to start. Less painful and traumatic than waxing.
That area is super sensitive for me.

I would get the Sally Hansen or Jolen bleach to make it lighter. Waxing hurts a ton. Not to mention, it's basically the same as plucking, so if her hair grows fast, you are going to be waxing all the time.

This. When we tried waxing, it left two bright red smudges above her lip, which were just as noticeable as the hair. Young skin is more sensitive. And the small battery operated device is good for touch ups or missed spots.

I use the Sally Hansen face cream for my lip. I cannot wax my lip at all - I get horrible bumps all over. It works well.

Re: Waxing the Upper Lip area

Ugh boys at that age are terrible. I'm sorry your daughter has to deal with that.

I don't recommend waxing at home. I took a huge patch of skin off once. It hurt so bad and it was a gigantic scab for sooo long. Def take her to somewhere reputable if you're going to start waxing. The nail places are filthy and I have horror stories about my experiences with them too.

I think a small battery operated trimmer would be a good option too. Maybe even better than waxing because with wax, the hair has to grow out before you can wax again.

OmGOD

Threading my upper lip hurt more than my tattoo and child birth COMBINED

I get my eyebrows threaded but bleach my stache. Though now I think I'm going to look into the other options mentioned here.

Re: Waxing the Upper Lip area

let me start my answer with: my wonderful significant other's nickname for me is "hairy monkey" so i believe i have a little experience lol

i would not bleach it, it could make it much more obvious.

i would suggest products like nair (buy something for sensitive skin). i would do it as she walks in the door after school on a friday. this way, if it creates some redness, she has all weekend to have it go away.

i have done the at-home wax products... i believe i've tried them ALL. and i have hurt myself along the way.

although nair leaves your skin a little numb afterwards, it's better than a lot of the other side effects.

good luck.

Re: Waxing the Upper Lip area

Thank you ALL so much. This was so helpful.

I have decided to start with the battery powered one and will see how that goes.

My DD was SO thrilled when I told her that I had ordered one today and we will do it on Friday in case there are any breakouts.

I will keep this thread on file in case we need any further options.

Thank you.Chat Icon Chat Icon
