Was I the only one sickened

...by the fact that last Saturday, America was so obsessed with the Royal wedding, that it seemed like nobody cared that 9 more children were dead, killed at their school? Hours and hours of TV coverage...for a couple that nobody knows, in a country that isn't even ours. I get people will say, "but it was nice to focus on something nice for a change, blah blah". Ok, I get that. We can't sit around and think about school shootings 24/7. And I get that, for some strange reason, Americans are obsessed with the Royals. But, the school shooting had happened just 24 hours before! Have we really become that numb? I was so outraged at the lack of media attention, or pretty much lack of any mention, of the Texas school shooting.

It was all over the news. I get what you are saying. Today another shooting at a middle school and barely got attention.

We as a country are vapid and celebrity obsessed. Our values are definitely screwed up

I can only speak for myself, the news and shootings are none stop its overload. I really cant take listening to the news anymore. The constant negativity in the news is overwhelming. While I agree with you about the importance to know about the shootings and I feel sad for those families who lost a loved one. It's important to find some enjoyment including watching a wedding, which, for most is a fair tale. I didn't watch the wedding I watched something like a 20/20 the night before.

I want to add: killings like this and in general are new to our country and society but sadly killings happen everyday in many countries, not in school but in the streets, at the farmers market.....

I wasn’t sickened, but I’m annoyed that nothing is really being done. When are the laws going to change?

Never. Because....the Second Amendment.
Don't "take our guns!!!!"

Better to have more people die in school shootings this year than in the active military.
Because people need their guns.

Not that I think this is true bc the media shows whatever will get the better ratings, but I think that by showing a shooting event non-stop is feeds the would-be killer’s who to know that they’ll get the notoriety that they crave. I think it’s important to keep it in the news so people will get fed up and vote out politicians in the NRA’s pocket, but they need to send a message that this is not the way to give them attention.

If you have ever enjoyed anything you have done it while other people in the world suffer.

All joy happens at the same time as all tragedy. That's how life is.

I am not sure what news you consume, but I have read and seen a lot of coverage of the Texas school shooting. To say that there was none is inaccurate.

The problem with school shootings is that this country has a disturbing gun culture. Not a wedding that people watched for a few hours.

I'm with you op.
They covered it most of the day Friday and tbh I didn't even watch it. Sadly, it's the same story over and over.
I used to be glued to the news after those events. I was annoyed on Saturday though that it wasn't covered at all. Even on the news websites you to scroll down past a ton of stupid wedding articles before there was any actual news. Imagine living in that town or having a family member who was killed and turning on the news the next day to see nothing but wedding coverage? What a punch in the face that must have been.

There have been school shootings in the US since 1840. They are just getting more frequent, and with the Internet, we hear about every single one. In the past, most people didn't hear about shootings in other states.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_shootings_in_the_United_States

There were 5 school shootings in May of this year alone.... and 22 this year so far... Not all of them were someone going in with guns blazing, trying to cause mass casualties, but guns fired on a school campus.

22 times guns were fired on school grounds... and we're in week 21 of the year...

This maybe true but we're still not use to people opening fire with guns and automatic weapons in mass style. Many yrs ago school safety training included bombs and hiding behind desks. Shootings happen everyday in every state. We might not hear about the 18 yr old who shot another fighting over a female but its happening. Mass shootings in general outside of schools happen outside the US as do bombings. For many in other countries its a way of life. I dont want that way of life to become our normal in the U.S.A.

I don't think you can really compare the two. People looked forward to the Royal Wedding because it was a reprieve from reality for a little bit, and to witness an American biracial divorcee marry a prince. We've become numb to the school shootings because we know nothing is going to be done. No matter how hard we fight, with our current fukkwad of a president, nothing is changing.

I read comments by pro gun people that we shouldnt keep covering these shooters in media because it gives prospective/copy cat shooters ideas!

Even sicker was the video going around Twitter of the Parkland survivors and victim's families being harassed at the grocery store because they are fighting for change. It's one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. And it wasn't one person, it was a bunch of people.

Re: Was I the only one sickened

America is accepting this just an ANOTHER day. I don't understand it at all. My kids are MY WORLD. I fear everyday that some lunatic will have a bad day and decide today is the day he/she will take out innocent kids. I pray that it won't be my child's school but no where is safe. The fact that those kids who died on Friday in their school were pushed out of the headlines by the royal wedding is disgusting. It tells you how much the media and society care about kids.

I don't understand how parents in this country can continue to support politicians and policies that don't keep or help to keep our children safe. I have friends that I barely talk to because of this issue but this is one issue that I can't sort of agree on. If you don't support stricter gun laws I can NEVER cast my vote for you.

I can't stand the arguement for more guns its ridiculous This school had armed security gaurds and guess what 10 people are still dead. We need less gun and they need to be much harder to get.
