Tea on an empty stomach
I notice that every time I get a brewed iced tea from Dunkin Donuts or a place like that, if I happen to drink it on an empty stomach I get horribly nauseated.
I thought it was just me, or just some odd coincidence but again today, I stopped and grabbed an unsweetened brewed iced tea from DD on my way back to work from the post office. I hadn't eaten lunch yet and my stomach was pretty empty since all I had was a hard boiled egg this morning at like 10 am.
Within minutes of starting to drink it, I felt like I would have to run to the bathroom and vomit. It kind of reminded me of the feeling you get when you take zinc on an empty stomach.
Luckily I had leftovers in the fridge for lunch so I heated those up real fast and once I got some pasta in my stomach, the nausea went away immediately.
I actually googled it and sure enough, it's a thing. Apparently the tannins in tea are what does it. And the longer it's brewed/stronger it is, the worse it is. Which would make sense because I know they brew tea for iced tea longer so it doesn't get as watered down by the ice.
Does anyone else notice this? It's awful!
So, just as PSA. If you're getting brewed iced tea, make sure you eat something with it!

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
Yes, if I drink a strong brewed tea without milk in it on an empty stomach, it bothers me. Especially first thing in the morning. I have to do toast with it.

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
And here I always thought that tea was the best thing for your stomach, and so soothing! Like if you are sick, don't drink coffee, it's too harsh, drink tea.
I guess not!
I never had this issue with coffee on an empty stomach, trust me!

Tea on an empty stomach
I'm that way with coffee, had to switch to tea in the mornings. About 4 years ago, I couldn't tolerate the coffee on an empty stomach anymore...in fact I can't have my first cup of coffee until after I have a couple of good meals in me, so that is typically after lunch. After that I'm fine and can drink it the rest of the day. But every so often even the tea bothers me in the morning and I don't have it till after I have breakfast. The beauty of having mild IBS!

I occasionally get that, I always thought it gave me gas pains when that happened.

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
I was told once that tea has tannins in it and that is what makes you nauseous.
I cannot drink tea on an empty stomach.

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
Doesn't make me nauseous, but gives me wicked heartburn on an empty stomach. I don't like milk in my tea, so have some crackers or toast with my tea.
Coffee doesn't bother me at all.

Tea on an empty stomach
Yes. I once made the mistake of having tea and a multivitamin on an empty stomach and the results were not good.

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
Yes, coffee or tea makes me sick in the morning. I don’t drink any of that anymore. I just wake up naturally; no more caffeine.

Re: Tea on an empty stomach
I drink black tea every morning before eating and luckily, I'm fine with it. But I know a lot of people (DH included) can't drink it on empty stomach.
