If you're not religious, what do you believe in for how life works? Karma - fate/destiny - life is random?

I grew up Catholic but I'm no longer religious. When I have a really hard time in life, I tend to fall back on praying but it's more of a "throw these thoughts into the world and hope something changes".

I wish I believed that Karma was real, but I just know that people do awful things and then they have good things happen to them in life. So I guess I'm more of a - random things just happen to random people. Bad things happen to good people and vise versa. Which sucks sometimes b/c when I'm having a difficult time, I want to believe that there's a reason for the awfulness or that there's a reason that so much awfulness can be piled on at one time, but I just feel it's random.

Karma for sure. Sometimes it takes a while for karma to do its job but it won't happen til it's the right time for it to happen. I def believe life is a circle and what goes around comes around, whether is a good thing or a bad one.

Re: what do you believe?

I voted other - I believe in a mixture of karma and fate. I also grew up Catholic and even taught religion for 8 years but have been exposed to the greed, etc. that sometimes exists in churches so while I believe in God.. I'm not sure I really believe in the power of Church anymore. In general, I've been through hell and back with my divorce but I tried to keep a positive outlook and surround myself with good people. I definitely think there are exceptions but, in general, I feel like you get what you put out into the universe. For example.. someone horrible wins the lottery. On the outside I'd be like wth but in general, maybe that money leads to other difficulties later in life or greed/power taking over. Who knows? I think a lot of what happens also has to do with attitude. When crap happens, I try to think of why me? As in.. how can this help me in the future? Will I be more caring towards someone else? Maybe it happened for a reason, to help someone who will experience something similar one day... rather than the "why me? I'm a good person, why does crap happen to me?" attitude.

I think that it's totally random however I think that how you handle things has a lot to do with how you perceive good luck/karma etc. For example, I am generally a very positive person and I focus on all of the wonderful things that have happened in my life. However, in reality I have had some crappy things happen to me, the worst being that I lost my father unexpectedly at the age of 22. But I don't focus on that, I focus on the good so I think people have the perception that I am extremely fortunate. My mother on the other hand is miserable and so she perceives herself as having an awful life with terrible luck. When in reality, she had the opportunity to also live a happy and fulfilled life, she just got in her own way of doing so. Not sure if this is really making sense but I see some people with crap situations living the happiest of lives and people with problems that are pretty small and they are absolutely miserable. So I think it's more about you as a person and your perception of things rather than karma or fate etc.
