I listened to two full days of victim impact statements. I've also read a lot about this because I follow gymnastics (although not as closely as I did 10 years ago).
First - pelvic floor techniques are legitimate medical procedures. Nassar claimed that was what he was doing. However, as Rachel Denhollander was able to show, Nassar's "treatment" although labeled as pelvic floor therapy, was not the actual legitimate therapy.
Second - the girls reported to the coaches and other athletic trainers, who in turn went to Nassar, who claimed it was legitimate medical therapy. I have yet to find one instance where the person told of the abuse was a mandated reporter. This is one of the first changes that needs to be made - all athletic coaches and trainers should be mandated reporters. Then, they would all have personal liability for failing to com forward.
Third - to whoever made the comment about the child having her pants off - that is one of the horrible things about this case - the girls (except for McKayla Maroney - my understanding of what happened to her is that she was raped after being drugged) had their pants on. They were all wearing "loose" shorts, which enable Nassar to slip his hands under them.
Fourth - if your parent was in the room while you were being treated, wouldn't you think everything the doctor was doing was the right thing? These girls were very young with no frame of reference. For many of them the abuse started before puberty.
These girls were groomed, and groomed well. Bela Karolyi, for all of his success, has been called a tyrant. Read some of Nadia's claims. Elite level gymnasts suffer a tremendous amount of verbal abuse that has been well documented. Nassar provided them with a shoulder to cry on. He gave them gifts, and food when they were alone and away from home. Much the way kidnapping victims "fall in love" with their captor, these girls looked at Nassar as their protector from the coaches. All of these girls adored him at one point, even worshiped him.
I'm not a doctor. If my daughter came to me and said the doctor did something that made her uncomfortable and I went to him, and he gave me some well thought out and detailed explanation of a medical therapy - who would I be to question it? In the year 2017 we have internet to look it up and see what it is, but in 1994 there was no such ability. Prior to late 1998 there was no google. It wasn't even really mainstream until 2004 or so.
Let's face it - this guy had serious street cred. He was the guy for USA gymnastics. Who remembers Kerri Strug and her vault on one foot in Atlanta that won the US team the gold medal?? Nassar is the doctor who treated her. He's in several pictures from those games. Most notably this one:

That's him with his hand out to take her from Marta Karolyi and Mary Lee Tracey.
Who was anyone to question this guy??? That's why he got away with it as long as he did.
Well said!

The US olympic committee just demanded that the entire USA Gymnastics board resign or they will lose their status as the governing body of the sport.
Good.
But aren't they also being questioned and investigated. I know they were called out quite a few times in court.
Who am i to question this man???
I am the mom and the protector of the child, I am the one to question this guy. Am i reading this right.. wtf? This is whats wrong with this society. I don't give a flying fluck if you are a doctor, no I don't have to trust you blindly. I don't want my child covered up at 6 yrs old while you are giving an exam. Why are you hiding what you are doing?
When my son was little and his pants were down and they were testing his testicles. best believe I was watching closely and making sure he was comfortable and the doctor was doing it right.
TRUST NO ONE, especially in a entertainment or sports industries. Blind ignorance is what these some of these parents had and because they wanted superstar kids. My baby tells me she felt uncomfortable, there is a reason why!!
Am I the only psycho on here that dosn't trust people on blind faith with my kid?
You are not the only one! I trust NOBODY. I especially do not trust doctors. It took all my strengthen to have to see a male MD when I was pregnant. All my life I ONLY saw females. I had to get over it fast because my practice had 2 men and 1 woman and they make you see everyone. Turns out I loved the male dr who delivered DD but it took a long time to feel comfortable. I question everything. Everything they recommend, every drug they prescribe. I have ZERO blind faith in any of them. And when it comes to my DD you would have to tear me off this assholes back if he ever put a curtain between her and I during an exam.
And what makes him so special? Because he was the gymnastics team doctor and there is a picture of him reaching out his hand to Kerri Strug after her vault? All I can think of when I see that picture is he probably couldn't wait to get her alone to fondle her. Sick bastarrd!
And what make sports so special and revered in this country that we'd sacrifice our children for it? I still dont' get that. It's a game. It's not helping society or saving lives. I never understood the God like status we gave to sports in this country.

Thank you for putting this in words. I just can't even begin to believe that literally hundreds of people knowingly turned a blind eye. That's just crazy. This man obviously was a master manipulator and found a way to exploit every single person around him. I'm not saying things maybe weren't amiss but hindsight is 20/20.
These coaches and and doctors were huge figures in these girls lives. I had a coach in hs that I spent tons of time with, traveling, going out for meals, even sleeping over. Nothing shady about it, she was a tyrant at practice but we all loved her. My brother was an elite athlete when he was young. My parents were not there watching every minute. In fact, he traveled to Colorado springs to an Olympic training center at age 13 without my parents. He was with other kids his age, parents were not invited, and it was a huge honor. Things have changed in recent years and I do think parents are more protective these days but in elite sports it's a whole other world as far as what's normal.
I'd like to think this will never happen again bc it's being outrageous what he got away with but we saw something similar already at Penn State and yet here we are again. It's sickening.

I was like that at first with male gyn and I did love my male gyn when I lived in NY.
I’m telling some of these parents in the industry are crazy (not all). I mean you see how some of them act at little league and dance competitions. When my son was on a show, there were parents who left their child filming on set and would take a nap in the trailer. If I couldn’t physically see my son, I was behind the camera looking at him film. Maybe I looked overprotective but I really didn’t care - that’s my baby. One time I had to walk a child back to the trailer because they were finished with the scene and the assistant said he couldn’t walk her back and she would have to stay there. I did but still, who am I - a stranger. Everyone had full access to this child. I can’t even imagine a big movie or production where it’s easier to get lost.

I follow gymnastics very closely. I'm sure there are many other people that knew. I'm praying they de-certify USA Gymnastics and start all over. Everyone needs to go.
As far as the parents, it's hard to judge people involved in elite sports. They put so much into their child's career and so many people get blinded by that and think that they need to keep going for it all to be "worth it." Obviously this doesn't make it right or excuse them, but people get so caught up in it I don't even think they can see straight.
But let's not forget this happens in many, if not all, youth sports. Insane coaches, pushy parents, poor training methods, it's everywhere. Hopefully this will help shed a light on abuse in all youth sports.
I can easily judge and blame the parents!! My DD is a swimmer - she's pretty good. I would NEVER and I mean NEVER have her see any doctor without me being in the room with her. As a minor, I would never let her travel to any away meet without myself or another chaperone with her (and I mean like one of my sisters, etc. - someone who could be in the room with her and a doctor). I don't let my child be in the room alone with any doctor - including the dentist. I am always there. And as sad as it is I years ago, and still bring it up to her once in a while to re-enforce it - if she ever feels uncomfortable, go with the gut - get out of that situation and let me or someone she trusts know immediately. Seriously is the glory of a medal or a record worth their health, physical or mental?? I have also told her if she needs a break - if she wants to stop - it's her decision. We would have a conversation with her about it, but really if they are not happy why make them do it. Parents have to be parents - protective, loving and supportive.

Re: Larry Nassar and USA gymnastics team
Anyone watch the 20/20 special on this last night? They are talking to victims. Explaining how he was able to get away with it. How in the gymnastics world at that level you are isolated from family. Conditioned to not question authority. Conditioned not to complain. That these were true medical treatments. Some who was considered a God in that field.Just horrifying. The women are saying they believe the number of victims are in the thousands.
And it hasn't been mentioned here . But he was also charged with possession of child pornography. They said he had 37,000 pictures and videos on his hard drives. This monster needs to have his d!ck ripped off and shoved down his throat!

I watched the end. I admire the courage these women have more than anyone. The whole thing is incomprehensible

I wonder if I can see the 20/20 special on demand. Actually I don't know if I should even try to watch it. The whole thing makes me so sick It baffles my mind how someone can get away with that for so long.
