Do you know why a doctor tests these during routine blood work?
I'm trying to see if anyone has information regarding these in routine blood work (i.e. why they test it, what it prevents, why it's important to test): Vitamin D uric acid gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) folic acid B12 TIA!

Re: Do you know why a doctor tests these during routine blood work?
Most are vitamins so I would think he is testing for a vitamin deficiency
Uric acid I was tested for when I had a kidney stone...some are formed from high uric acid (not mine it turns out). Uric acid is also associated with gout.
I don't know what GGT is.
I would call your doctor and ask

GGT is a liver test.
I would ask your doctor why they ran them. They are outside of a standard chemistry panel for most labs (i.e. your doctor had to purposely check them off individually as opposed to just checking off "chemistry panel".

I know a B12 deficiency can cause a lot of neurological issues. My boss had one. She kept falling despite being a very fit and athletic person. She was also extremely irrational and having memory issues. We thought she was just stressed out and being a b*tch, because we had a large project going on and her son was getting married. My co-worker and I had a few days were we close to walking out because she was so hard to work with. Then the Dr. found the deficiency, and she started taking supplements and it was like she was a different person (still not easy to work for, but much better).

I know we all come here for info and advice but this is really questions/convo for you to have with your physician. Have you already tried to ask her/him??

ITA. Also, all of the above is included on my bloodwork every year, I just checked the last 3 years. Don't you want your Dr. to be checking every thing they possibly can?

I think her insurance co. kicked back the claim saying those tests weren't covered on routine bloodwork. She had posted another thread about it a few days ago i think

No. Not unless I had a specific concern. Those tests don’t show much anyway. I can totally see why insurance would kick the claim back.

LOL. If in doubt I just pop a supplement. I take Vit D in the winter, never was tested for it in my blood, but whatever. Can't hurt. Same with Folic acid, B12 etc

To each their own. I would want my dr. to test for everything known to man, but that's just me and thankfully they do a lot! I must've missed the insurance kicking it back part.

yes. My insurance company is denying some of the blood work. I am going to send in an appeal to the insurance company. While I can google each one to find out the benefit of having them tested, I figured I'd ask the knowledgeable folks here to see if I could save myself the research. I didn't include the insurance info in this post because when I did in the last post that was the focus of everyone's concern. Just looking for info. Thanks all for your help...on to my appeal

Can you have your doctor appeal it? If he ordered the tests, he must have a reason.

those things are always on my blood tests but I also have issues that are related to an iron and B12 deficiency. Is anything going on that would maybe prompt the dr to order those?
I also think you should have the doctors office appeal for you
