holiday anxiety

anyone get this? I am feeling it already and it sucks!

Already had issues with thanksgiving that got sorted out, and now my older sister is being a pain about Christmas. It was just Halloween yesterday and I can't believe these conversations happen earlier and earlier each year. I always get a little bit of anxiety over the holidays, but it's usually from around December 1 onward. I don't feel like dealing with this for the next 2.5 months ughhhhhh

Who's got some xanax I can borrow until 12/25? lol

I usually don't this early but so many people have posted on FB - Halloween is over so let's bring on the Xmas carols. Slow your roll, people. There's still a full month to get thru before we even get to Thanksgiving!

I don't have holiday anxiety but I GET it when the seasons are rushed and it's shoved down your throat in Oct and you feel like you are behind the game because you haven't bought and wrapped all your shit by Nov 1.
Please
Slow the eff down
It gives me anxiety

that's how i am, and we have had a plan for what we're gonna do, but it's annoying when someone tries to throw a wrench in the plans to benefit themselves. my oldest sister did this. she wants to spend christmas dinner with her in-laws because they do a "better dinner" which is fine that's her decision. But she's expecting all of us to do christmas morning together instead. We do christmas morning with my in laws, and we're not changing that up. My other sister has plans in the morning as well. we said no, which resulted in THIRTY FIVE angry text messages in a group text from my crazy sister. All within 2 hours when I was teaching and not near my phone.

So stressful and so annoying that the holidays bring out some of the most ungrateful and selfish qualities out in certain people

Re: holiday anxiety

Might edit - please do NOT quote - Thanks!

Normally - NO

This year - YES!

We are traveling to OK for Christmas. The one thing my MIL wanted for Christmas last year was for us all to be together on Christmas and my BIL and SIL live in OK. Everyone else lives within 3 hours of each other in the Northeast so it just totally makes sense for 3 families to take a 7 hour plane trip to OK during a busy travel season instead of one family.

The one thing I said I wanted last year was to do Christmas morning at my house (we usually travel to see my family on LI and stay at my sister's overnight.) I was firm in saying that we would not be doing that this year and then my ILs say, "BIL and SIL invited us to OK and we will pay for everyone to go." My DH and I do not want to go. We put up a fight - ESPECIALLY since we are the ONLY family with a child AND this is the first year that our son (3.5) actually understands Christmas and I want him to celebrate at OUR house.

Needless to say, we compromised. My MIL and FIL wanted us to be there from December 24-29. Okay, that is all the time off we have from work for the holiday. We are now going from the 25-28.

Re: holiday anxiety

I'll start by saying that I LOOOOOOVE the holidays. LOVE them!! It's my favorite time of the year and for that reason, I don't let ANYONE ruin them for me.

My family can be difficult around the holidays. There is always some argument over something, someone is always grumpy, I feel like most of them are not interested anymore and don't want to be bothered. However, I decided YEARS ago that I won't let their negativity affect me. I love everything about this time of year and I want to make it special for my kids and my husband and I. So I make the decisions and choices that are best for ME, I put myself FIRST, I do the things around the holidays that bring ME joy and EVERYTHING and EVERYONE else is secondary. Period. My family under my roof comes first. Let me tell you, it's so freeing when you just remove yourself from the drama and put yourself first and do what is best for you.

I learned a long time ago that you won't please everyone so to that end, don't try. Don't make yourself miserable to try and make someone else happy because it won't work. They'll just find something else to b!tch about. When family starts to irk me I go find something festive to do and put it out of my mind. Listen to Xmas music while wrapping gifts by the tree, enjoy a mug of cocoa under a cozy blanket, drive around and look at the lights, etc. Don't let others make you nuts, do what makes you happy.............everything else will work itself out.Chat Icon

Re: holiday anxiety

No stress here. I'm due mid December and plan on hosting thanksgiving and Christmas. Whoever wants to come just has to rsvp 3-4 days ahead. I don't sit and cook a week in advance. I actually go food shopping thanksgiving morning with the exception of the turkey. I make a lottttt of food and it takes me under an hour, sometimes two if I throw in extra dishes. I would get stressed every holiday because someone decides to be a complete asssshole. I don't care anymore.
