Interpret this ad
If there's an ad that says, "Book by September 12th," until when do you think you have to book?
September 11 - 11:59pm
Or
September 12 - 11:59pm

Yes. It's really not a big deal, but the marketing person who replied actually tried to give me a lesson about what the ad means. I started wondering if I'd lost my mind.

That's what I did. The response was that "thru (sic) would mean September 12th is included. 'By' means before." Fascinating dictionary they have

I would understand it that book by= book before
So you have until 11:59 on 9/11
If they included 9/12 it would say book thru 9/12

Um, no. I teach ESL and my students have difficulty with by and until, so I'm pretty familiar with this.
According to Swan (grammarian), 'by' means not later than. For example-- I'll be home by five o'clock (=at or before 5).
They could probably argue about specific times, though. I'd call and complain. Through just sounds strange, TBH.
