For those that have taken car seats on airplanes with them......
Did you purchase one of those wheeled carts that the car seat attaches to and the child can sit in the seat while its being wheeled? Trying to figure out the best way to do this. I can just put the car seat in her umbrella stroller but then there's no where for her to sit. Image Attachment(s):

We had two car seats to carry so I bought the bag with the back pack straps and it worked out perfectly. We've done it twice now. The link is of a similiar one. The one we have is currently unavailable

I put both my kids in the double stroller (3 and 1.5) and put their two car seats on one cart (one like in the picture and the other flipped over and attached with a bungee cord).

How was that at the xray machine? Do you take the seat out of the bag? The only thing I didn't like about the cart was unhooking the seats at the xray machine.

We used a car seat backpack. It was easier to be handsfree and dh wore it. We had to take it out at the security line.

Re: For those that have taken car seats on airplanes with them......
We had a very small roller thing that was handed down to us. Kid could not sit in seat while it was being rolled. It broke & we did not repurchase. It was more of a pain to use unless you were doing substantial walking in the airport. We just carry ours with one hand and gate check it, then Carey out & stick in rental car. We carry a small stroller now to the gate with our 1 year old and gate check that too.

I just check the seat with my regular luggage, the airlines i have flown do not charge you to check carseats. So rather than carry it through the whole airport i get rid of it right when i get there.

Re: For those that have taken car seats on airplanes with them......
I did buy one and it ended up breaking first time using it on the way to Disney . For the return flight and our most recent flight to CA, I just put the car seat in her stroller. I was also able to put DD in the car seat while it was in her stroller, which worked the best. I just made sure she was buckled in and to hold the back/top of the car seat so it wouldn't accidentally fall off.

I know many people that do check their car seats but I've always heard/read carseats shouldn't be checked. Luggage/car seats are not handled with care and are tossed around. They could get small cracks or damage that you might not notice or know about. Same reason behind replacing car seats after you've been in a car accident. Plus, I always put DD in her car seat on the plane, 1) for safety and 2) it keeps her contained and she doesn't really ask to get up/out

I agree with the pp. I would not check a car seat thy way they handle luggage.

Thanks for the input, ladies. Definitely not checking the car seat (either at the ticket counter or at the gate) -- part of the reason I'm bringing it is for DD to be able to sit in it on the plane and then to put in the rental car when we arrive at our destination. Car seats aren't supposed to be checked as they can be tossed around and damaged compromising the functionality of the seat. Maybe I'll look into one of the backpack things!

I have a car seat bag that has wheels and a shoulder strap- it is babies r us brand-I like it a lot-it also has two pockets that I use for dd stuff we might need in the plane. I travel alone a lot with my dd and I can mange the car seat bag, stroller and carry on alone with this bag.

Make sure your car seat has the OK for plane use. Many of the 5 point harness ones don't. The reversible ones at usually ok.
I've been impressed by how the airlines handle the gate check stuff. I watch it go on the plane (fun for the kids). I've flown JetBlue and American Airlines and have gate checked for the past 6 years (the same car seat).

Re: For those that have taken car seats on airplanes with them......
When we brought the car seat last year, I bought a few bungie cords and strapped the car seat to my little wheelie carryon. It worked great – and it’s a pretty flimsy carryon. I was even able to put the smaller carryon in the seat so I didn’t have to carry that as well. DS couldn’t sit in it while we wheeled it around – but he was 3 anyway so he could walk. If he was littler, I would have used the ergo to carry him.

we bought one of those wheeled carts. it worked out pretty well. my DS was 2 at the time and we were able to keep him in the car seat for 80% of the trip. we only had to take him out when we got to the airport so my husband could attach the car seat to the cart, through security and then to get on the plane. it was so convenient to be able to wheel him through the airport. and then have our own car seat in the rental car.

You don't have to take them out of the bags at the X-ray. I have car seats approved for flying, so I flip them over so the "butt" of the car seat is sticking up and it fits perfectly though the x ray too.
I checked my car seats once and the bags came back shredded! So I never did that again.
