When do I begin to worry, milestone/development related

This may be a little pre-mature but I am a bit nervous and my gut is nagging me. My only basis for comparison id DD who is 3 and has always had an insane vocabulary and started talking like crazy at 11-12 months. My DS will be 14 months tomorrow and so far he really only has one word Dada. I can get him to say NaNa when I say Mama to him. Everything is Da or Dis. He babbles constantly, has vocal inflection, points, waves, claps, does No No with his finger and will follow very simple commands. If I ask him to point to the moon in his book he will. His fine motor skills seem to be on point but he is not walking yet., He takes a few steps from say a table to me. He will walk with one of those push around toys no problem but not on his own. I know the walking will come in time (he is also very big for his age, 30lbs and wears a 2T) it the language that has got me worried. Am I just being overly concerned? TIA

When do I begin to worry, milestone/development related

Here is the exact thing I wrote when my DS was 13 months old:

"My DS is also 13 months and says "dada" constantly and occasionally "mama" when he is in distress. He doesn't use either word appropriately - he refers to everyone/thing as dada. He'll occasionally makes ba or ga sound, but nothing consistently. I'm not concerned yet."

He is now 2.5 years old and is NEVER stops talking (unless he's watching TV)!!!!!!!!

14 months is still young for walking, especially for boys. I think by 18 months they will want about 10 words, but I wouldn't worry yet. I'm sure your ped will ask about it at the next well visit, so you can ask then.

14 months is really young for talking. I have 3 boys (only 2 of talking age) and they both did not start until between 18 months and 2 years. Closer to 2. My ped said he would not be concerned until they were 2.

Your DS sounds completely normal. By 1, they should have one word. He is in the normal range for walking.

My first was way ahead for many milestones so my second seemed comparatively very behind when she was within the range of normal. Honestly, Your Ds seems fine. None of my kids walked until 16 months or had much to say before 18 months.

I think if he is understanding, pointing, grunting, etc then I wouldn't worry. Is he interactive and smiles, laughs, responds as you'd expect?

DD was a littler later than others with words but clicked all of a sudden. She understood and communicated via pointing, etc.

Give it another few months. I was told they don't really look at any kind of evaluation until 18 months.

What you describe sounds normal. Kids have their own timelines and often go through spurts.

If you are really concerned, it can't hurt to talk to a doc

Your son sounds normal. My older son didn't walk until almost 17 months old and didn't talk until after 2. Now he is completely normal at 3.5.

i'm a speech therapist. obviously, i don't know your son... but he sounds like he's doing fine for his age Chat Icon he's attemping to communicate, use sounds/words, he can follow some simple directions... usually around 18 months is when the language "explostion" happens and they start to use more words. Especially for a boy who has a (I'm guessing!!) chatty older sister- it sounds fine! a lot of kids start using sounds before "real" words... so maybe try to get him to imitate animal sounds, or other "environmental" sounds like "beep beep" "wee!!" that kind of stuff. them imitating those kinds of things leads to them imitating real words Chat Icon
again, i don't know him at all... but he sounds like he's doing fine Chat Icon

Thank You ladies for all of your responses and I am sure he is fine. My daughter was just ahead by this age in comparison (yes she is a total chatty Cathy) (which I know isn't really fair since each kid is different.) He is def communicating and pointing and making sounds. I am sure it is just a matter of time before it develops. Thank you all for your insight and experiences. I won't worry anymore and will just wait for my lil bub to become a chatter box like his big sissy.

Re: When do I begin to worry, milestone/development related

I was also very worried about my DS at that age. Especially since his closest sibling has a disability that causes her to have NO speech...ever. So, his closest role model just grunted and pointed, which he began to do; so my concern was that he thought that was a normal way to communicate. I contacted DD's former speech therapist, and she said that as long as he was understanding everything we said, and was on par with physical development, not to worry. So I tried not to. He just turned 3, and talks non-stop! It will come...just give it time.

Re: When do I begin to worry, milestone/development related

Both of my boys increased their vocabulary around 15 months. My pediatrician looks for 5 words by 18 months and says that with boys, the language explosion may not happen until 18-24 months. I wouldn't be concerned yet. It's still early. Also, try not to compare your kids. They all do things at their own pace.
