FAFSA -----ugh ---advice
SO I have to help my nephew fill out his FAFSA.
Both parents are dead and he is living with a guardian (my aunt and uncle).
I know I need their 1040 from 2015.
As I go to the sight and we start filling it out is it pretty self explanatory?
When it asks for "parents" does that refer to his dead parents? His guardian?
Any insight, or pointing me to a website with advice would be grateful.
Thanks.

FAFSA -----ugh ---advice
I had to do my step son's last year and now have to do it again this year. It is pretty self explanatory, but there are some things that can be confusing. I actually called the help number (I think it was the FAFSA one and they were very helpful - but might have been TAP or something else that I called - sorry, just not sure)
If I recall correctly, because SS lives with me and DH, I am considered his parent and my income is included on the form. His mother's income does not go anywhere on the form (even though she and not me, has all the legal rights and responsibilities when it comes to him).
There are questions on the form that ask about if both parents were deceased and if there is a legal guardian appointed. So, when that is the case, I think the "Parent" section does not have to be filled out. And I don't think you will need his guardian's tax returns.
Good luck to both of you!

Definitely call them. The income of "parents" often means the person legally responsible to provide support.

Thank you. In following FAFSA guidelines it looks like my nephew is independent and wont need any financial info from his guardians
Last question. Does anyone know if you get the FAFSA ID immediately in your email when applying for the ID?
