Is 5 years old too young for an ice skating party?

Re: Ice Skating Birthday Party- Need Opinion

It's borderline.

My nieces Ice Skate. Older one is truly gifted and competes. Younger one does it more for the fun. The younger one started when she was 5, following in her older sisters footsteps. She did very well. I did see a lot of little ones her age there and some loved it and some were just too scared.

I'm no help lol

You may be better off with rollerskating. Less chance of serious injury (getting cut by a blade when falling)

Ice Skating Birthday Party- Need Opinion

We went to a 5th birthday ice skating party. Some kids loved it and skated the whole time. My DS didn't like it and skated for about two minutes. He had fun anyway though because there were video games to play and of course lunch and cake. I think its a good chance for kids to try ice skating, even if they've never been before. (This party was at The Rinx).

Re: Ice Skating Birthday Party- Need Opinion

I feel like I'd be a nervous wreck about DD on the ice at that age. And I am no good at skating so it's not like I could get on the ice and help her.

at what age does the rink start with lessons and parties?

I would not worry about being sued, no different than when people have petting zoos and ponies at their home or parties in gymnastic places. all potential accidents.

My DD is 5 and has been taking ice skating lessons since she was 4. But if kids have never been on the ice, I don't think it would be too much fun for them and a lot of work for the parents since they would probably have to go on the ice with them.

Re: Ice Skating Birthday Party- Need Opinion

My older son has been playing ice hockey since 4 .......he's been asking for a skating party forever.
I finally gave in for his 7th birthday this past year. I personally wasn't comfortable asking people to put their kids out on the ice before that. Especially, as a hockey player my kid is skating backwards circles around his friend, many of whom have never been on skates - so where's the fun for everyone in that?

How did it work out for the 7 year olds? I think all the kids are on the beginner level in our case, including DD, thats my issue. Dont want the kids to hate it-- DD went to a skating party this summer for the first time on skates and loved it though and has been wanting a skating party since. I may veto it as her parent though if it will be too difficult /not enjoyable for the parents and kids which i think it may be

I had my daughters 8th birthday at an ice skating rink and all the girls just clung to the wall the whole time. It really wasn't fun for any of them.

I think it's too young. I imagine some of the children would be 4 (or maybe younger) too.

I loathed skating parties as a kid. I still can't ice skate, never could roller blade, and can barely roller skate, so I am biased lol.

i have been to one for 6 years old and it was a NIGHTMARE! All the kids were falling - the parents were falling trying to catch the kids - kids were getting hurt or didnt want to keep skating... I mean, at 5 they have really no balence or anything. I would not go to another ice skating party until my kids are older

No if they have those walker things I'd love it!!! It would count as my son's first skating experience so then I wouldn't have to feel like a bad mom because I haven't taken him yet.Chat Icon

ETA: Don't they have those walker things at most rinks?

This. Although I haven't been to one, I know that my DS at 5 would not have the balance nor confidence to try ice skating like that.

Ice Skating Birthday Party- Need Opinion

We just had an ice skating bday for my dd's 5th birthday. It actually turned out awesome. All of the kids had a blast. I hired an instructor for 45 min to help the kids whose parents do not skate.

No it isn't too young. My daughter had a lot of friends takng lessons at 3 and 4. My youngest was about 4 when she started. Just be prepared that parents might want to skate with their kids at 5. I know a few who did parties hired a skate instructor to give a mini group lesson.

I think it's too young. My 5 yo couldn't skate at all and neither could I really even though I was pretty decent years ago. Having those walker things available could change all that though. The place we tried didn't have those.
