Some hope: ending the dog meat trade (nothing graphic inside)

Today on my fb feed, I found 2 items that gave me great hope in this fight. A Congressman from Florida is holding a forum in DC on ending the Yulin dog meat festival, and had so many rsvps they had to move the meeting to a much bigger venue. And in the UK, horrific images have been splashed across the front pages of their newspapers of what is going on, sparking rightful outrage.

It is through awareness and pressure on these governments to stop this madness that we will see change. It's the first time I've felt hope in this area. Perhaps with the publicity, sanctions will come, boycotts will be publicized, people will stop buying goods from these areas; you know when you hit them in the pocket that's when things can change.

I know we have a lot of animal lovers on this site, thought i'd share this news.

Just a hopeful post from me today, as we start a new week. Chat Icon

I never heard of this and it's pretty gross (the images I saw when I looked it up), but what's the difference between eating dogs and any other animal? Just b/c one is typically a house pet doesn't mean it shouldn't be eaten, but it's ok for other animals.

I read that 10,000 dogs are consumed for this festival, but it's the same for chickens on a daily basis.

I, personally, wouldn't eat a dog, and I haven't eaten cow in 20 years (rarely pig, but regularly turkey and chicken). I just can't get behind the outrage of this unless people/government are also a huge advocate for all animals. I know this is a cynical statement, but someone in the US government that is advocating against this, but not the horrible conditions of cow, pig, and chicken doesn't seem like they're doing it for anything other than attention to themselves. Beef industry money is lining the pockets of *many* in the government to look the other way.

To me it's just completely and totally different. I do get your point, but i can't even compare eating dogs to eating other animals for a bunch of reasons. (And I am not a big meat eater either.)

OP, this is good news Chat Icon

I understand your point. As a vegetarian who doesn't wear leather or fur or down etc, I also don't support the factory farming of the other animals you mention. The difference, from my standpoint, is that the dogs in these countries are killed in the most vile, vicious ways imaginable, as to make the meat "more tender" with all their adrenaline shooting through it. Also many are pets that are just stolen from people and transported across borders via gigantic dog transport trucks, many die en route.

People within these countries are also starting to take stands against these practices, which is also great.Chat Icon

follow up: i listened live to the Congressman's forum yesterday and was reduced to tears by a video shown to the audience of all the cruelty going on. People in the live audience were actually screaming and shrieking.

This is the only way anything will change, by bringing it to light and being strong for those who can't speak for themselves. It was, in my mind, a historic day for this nation.

If anyone is interested in viewing the hearing, it's on Congressman Alcee Hastings facebook page.

yes, but how do we solve this problem of over grazing etc. Birth control they say is out of the question.

Castration of males? keeping females and males separate when the female is in estrus?

What is the rationale for not using birth control? It's done on Assateague Island.

What's the reason for the slaughter?

Over population and over grazing. It costing Billions to control. No natural predators

They say It only last 2 yrs. I have concerns about using Birth control but not against it.

This is a man made problem (I think) like all others :(

I think the difference is the way these dogs are being killed and treated. Beaten then hung then boiled alive, skinned alive, etc. I am sure our meat industry has aspects of cruelty unfortunately, but I also am pretty sure our meat industry isn't boiling is skinning animals alive before beheading them. Or having them boil to death in a pot alive. Big difference. It's the cruetly aspect of killing the dogs, it's the SHOW they make of it. BIG difference IMO.

Exactly. Literally sadistic, barbaric killings for SHOW, for people to see, for them to get their jollies. It's sick and absolutely NOT just for the sake of eating dog because they are "Overpopulated". Big big difference.

because they believe the adrenaline flowing through the veins makes the meat taste better, gross, I don't agree, just stating one reason why.

Goobste and Mush, I agree in the difference, but cattle and large animals are trampled on when they drop due to dehydration etc and can be dragged across the floor by tractor all the way to the slaughter house. Horses in Mexico and not stunned, but rather men stab them over and over in their necks, just as cruel IMO.

though I think we all agree on the cruelty of the topic
