Anyone have suggestions for how to stop their toddler from biting?

DS (almost 3) bit another kid at camp today. Not hard enough to break skin, and the counselor and director were SO NICE about it and even said he didn't do it out of aggression but because they were playing around being silly. This isn't the first time he's bit, but it IS the first time at daycare/camp. He's bit me or DH a couple times out of SERIOUS anger/frustration, and he bit my nephew (who is older than him) when my nephew got aggressive with him. But generally he's VERY well behaved at camp/daycare, so this was surprising and upsetting.

He is NOT an aggressive kid, but I've watched closely in the last month to see what triggers his biting (it's happened let's say 4 times in a month, and we went a stretch of 10-12 days between the last incident and now). I've noticed it happens with me or DH out of extreme frustration, but with my nephew it seemed as if he was responding to aggression and didn't know how to use his words, or he DID use his words and my nephew didn't listen/respond nicely, so it escalated. The incident today I didn't see but like I said I was told it was NOT aggressive, but more silliness/playing.

We have talked it out with him many times, modeled the right behavior, etc etc, and he had gotten better at using his words with me, DH, and my nephew (they played for hours Friday with no incident at all, my nephew at one point roughly covered DS's mouth with his hand and DS moved away and didn't react - later, DS asked before taking my nephew's hand to hold, because we've been emphasizing getting permission before touching others.) I'm really upset that it happened at camp. I spoke to him about it at length today, and he really does seem to understand that this is a behavior he isn't supposed to do...but it seems he forgets in the moment.

Any advice?

Try buying a book or googling social stories for biting and read to him daily.
I would also look on Pinterest for ideas. I have a resident that bites (extreme in this case, nothing like your DS) and I've gotten some nice ideas
I would also talk to your DS about what he can do as an alternative for biting, like what else can he do when frustrated (take a deep breath, walk away, maybe give him a stress ball to carry) replacing the biting should be a behavior requiring less effort but serve the same function.
When your DS bites you or your DH use those moments to teach him appropriate behavior on the spot and discuss what else he could have done instead. Reading a book and practicing replacement behavior on a daily basis will be effective. Hugs to you!!! It's normal especially at 3, you will get through this!!!

Ugh. I feel for you. One of my twins went through a biting phase. He only ever bit his brother, but we had some close calls. It was a lot of reminding. We also bought a book or two and read them to him. Don't remember which ones but there were tons on Amazon and I think what finally did it believe it or not, was don't bite your friends video from yo gabba gabba. Lol.

He was really into the show at the time. Hang in there! Sounds like your son definitely understands which is like 80% of the battle.

DD went through a biting phase... Younger than 3 though. She bit her brother (bigger and stronger). We just repeated "no biting".

It disappeared completely until she was bit when a girl wanted her toy. My DD (verbal pretty early) yelled at the girl "my mama says no biting". She was 2.5

it stinks, but its a phase. My son went through it. i said no, put him down, walked away, made no big deal. It stops on its own.

Same with hair pulling if that happens too

Thanks for all the feedback! We started talking about how biting is only for food, and he's been very receptive. I told the daycare staff the language we're using so they can be consistent. He was totally fine today!
