Stopping naps early

Has anyone stopped your dc naps early? My ds is 16 months. He sleeps 10-12 hours at night. He won't take a nap earlier than 1-2pm. He'll sleep 1-2hours (I wake him up if he gets to 2 hours) But when he naps he won't go to bed at 8. It's driving me crazy. He will stay up till 11-12pm. I let him cry for 30 mins at a time. Nothing works. It's 11:30 and I want to pull my hair out! I'm exhausted and pregnant and he's still wide awake! I'm losing my mind! The only thing I can think of is to cut his nap out, even though he'll be a mess in the afternoon. Did anyone stop naps this early?

Stopping naps early

I tried and it was a complete and total disaster- my dd is a mess if she doesn't nap when she is tired. I tried eliminating the nap and moving her bedtime up but by bedtime she was so over tired that she could not settle. My pediatrician encouraged me to let dd sleep when she is tired--so she naps in the afternoon and I generally get her to bed by 10:30. If she takes a very long nap I will take her to the playground when she wakes up/ it definitely helps.

6 or 7 hours of wake time between the last nap and bedtime is a LONG time for such a young baby. I think he's staying up so late because he's overtired. Do you have a bedtime routine?

Yea we have a bedtime routine. He was doing great. Going to bed by 8-830 and waking around 7-7:30. Then he started waking in the middle of the night and not settling at all. Then he started not going to sleep on his own anymore. He is becoming crazy attached to us. If I just stand in his room he will lay down, but as soon as I'm out of sight he freaks. This goes on for hours at night now. I was always against my kids sleeping in our room and my dd never has. But the only thing that has given any of us sleep in the last two weeks has been bringing him in our bed in the middle of the night and he passes out immediately. Ugh I hope it's a phase, but I know I'm starting a new problem by bringing him into my bed too.

I agree with PP it sounds like maybe DC isn't going to bed at 8 because he is overtired. at 16 months my DD was waking up at 7am, napping from 1-3, and asleep by 7pm.
Every child is different and requires a different number of hours of sleep, but 10-12 total for a 16 month old doesn't seem like enough. I believe at that age 15 total hours is recommended between night time and naps.

FWIW, I went through a napping strike with my DD about a month ago. She wouldn't nap at all and after 2 weeks she was a nightmare. I would have let her drop the naps if she wasn't so aggressive and cranky. I took the recommendations of a poster on here to push her bedtime an hour earlier. She fell fast asleep and woke up the same time or later. I also started a nap time rock in a quiet environment with little to stimulate her besides listening to the birds chirp outside. On days she is at school/camp she naps soundly for at least an hour.

Both my boys gave up napping around this age. They were cranky in the afternoon for a while but would go to bed then around 6:30/7 PM and wake up around 7/7:30 AM. My mom said I stopped napping when I was 12 months old!

Is it possible he's having trouble falling asleep because he's getting his molars? Have you tried Advil to see if it helps?
