Re: Home reno shows
Most of the ones I watch seem to be filmed in Canada. Decked Out, Yard Crashers, etc

You can search the show's websites and it will tell you which city they film in. We were on an HGTV show when we lived in Seattle, but it wasn't a renovation show (it was My House Is Worth What). I just kept checking websites to see when the show was in my area.

Yard Crashers, Kitchen Crashers and First Time Flip are filmed in the States.

Be vary careful. They have a history of being very poor quality in their workmanship. And they do not pay for the renovations.
Based on those 2 things it is probably not worth it.

Wow, I always assumed the show paid for whatever they did, or at least did it at a very discounted rate. If I'm paying for the renovation, why would I want them to rush through it in some unrealistically short time frame?

B/c people want to be on TV. I thought about a reno show before, but it said we had to have a minimum of $10K to be a part of the show. No thanks - I can take my $10K and hire a local company!

Re: Home reno shows
im pretty sure that most renovations done on most tv shows are all fluff and no substance. I'd assume the work is done quickly to look good on tv, but not be truly lasting. The only renovations i've ever truly loved on hgtv were the ones done by Candice Olson on Divine by Design. She could redo my house anyday!
I'm pretty sure also that most people on the shows pay themselves or the show only covers a very small amount.

I actually heard that the shows DO cover the cost of the renovations but they give you a 1099 and you have to pay taxes?

Not according the shows that are looking for homeowners on HGTV. I just looked at the site I posted above - http://www.hgtv.com/shows/be-on-hgtv - and here's what some of the renovation shows require:
* New Orleans show - at least $40K * Buying fixer upper in Waco - at least $30K * Listed Sisters (Nashville) - at least $18K * Vacation Homes renos - at least $30K

You have to pay for it, and you get a 1099 for taxes for the labor. It is very expensive and there have been a few lawsuits. The only one I would do is. Holmes on Homes, Sarah Richardson, or Candice Olsen, but they are in. Canada.

Re: Home reno shows
Another forum I was on, someone was a contractor on one of the TV reno shows, and he was commenting on all of the corners that they cut in order to make the production schedule.
