How did you get rid of the pacifier?

I dread the day but we have to do it. DS only uses it at night.

With DD 1 we took it away cold turkey- no problem after 1 or 2 nights

With DD 2 cold turkey did not work at all - so I cut it little by little until there was nothing left of the pacifier by the end of the week

We did a count down. He used to sleep with 3--one in his mouth and one in each hand. I said when you turn three it's time to say bye bye paci. We did three days of just 2. Then 3 days of just 1. Then I took the last one. A tiny bit of whining in the first night. Never asked for it again after that.

Cutting the tip never worked for us. We put it in a box and I told her the mailman had to take it to mail to other babies. First two days were rough, especially at night and then she opforgot all about it.

Re: How did you get rid of the pacifier?

It was a battle I didn't really want to fight. DS1 gave it up on his own when he started potty training at 2y9m. I was surprised because he seemed pretty attached. DS2 was even more attached to the pacifier. We talked about a paci fairy, being a big boy, etc, but he'd refuse to even entertain the idea of giving up his beloved paci. Then, one day when he was potty training he dropped it in the toilet by accident. We threw it out and that was it. He didn't really ask for it. I was shocked how easy the transition was, but I guess the fact that he got rid of it, even by accident, was something he could accept. He was a little over 3.

For DD we cut the whole thing off and told her our dog did itChat Icon ( he recently has ate one of her other toys) and that was it. She only used at nap and bed time and she didn't even use it the whole night. She was a little after two I was nervous because she slept through the night sone very young and I was afraid now it would be hard for her to go to bed. Hers was attached to a doll she slept with the doll for a very long time.

DS is two now and I haven't done it yet. He is way more addicted than DD was and we let him use it more than she did. I plan on doing it soon but I have feeling this time it will be torturous! Chat Icon

We cut the tip - gradually - a little at first then a little more every few days til it wasn't even worth her while to have it in her mouth anymore

I'm dreading it. My DD is only 8 months old, so I'm not in a rush yet. But she LOVES the paci. She will take it out of her mouth to drink her bottle and hold it in her hand so she can pop it right back in. If I am holding it, she'll look around until she finds it. It's her obsession. Curious what age people had the most success getting rid of it. Our ped said 12 months, but that seems young to me.

We did it when they turned 3 (literally on or right after their bdays). We told them the Binky fairy comes to take it when they become "big girls" and dont need it anymore. The binky fairy also left a present. Both my girls were very attached and doing it this way there was no tears or anything! It worked for us to wait until they kinda 'got it' and were ready to give it up for a toy they really wanted.

Re: How did you get rid of the pacifier?

The binky fairy came and and took it. She needed binkies for all the new babies.

First night was hard but all in all she cried maybe 10 minutes. After that there was no crying but she would ask for it every night. DD was 3 when we took it away. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How did you get rid of the pacifier?

Cold turkey. We went away to visit family and when we came back we told him that we left them in Toronto. He had only been using them at night for a while before that. The first night he looked for it and cried a bit and then it took him an extra 20 min or so to fall asleep, we stayed with him until he did. The next night he asked for it once and then went to sleep. Hasn't asked for it since.

He was 26 months when we did it.

Good lord you are giving me flashbacks.

We did the cut down method too. It was completely absurd. He actually turned the hard plastic part (the part that was suctioned to his face for the first 2 years of life) and would suck on that sideways. Finally, he gave up on it. On occasion, I catch him looking fondly at my DS2's binkies. Almost like a recovered addict.

How did you get rid of the pacifier?

I am dreading this since we plan on taking DS's away after he turns 2 in a month. I am debating on the cutting it off and the binky fairy. He only uses it for bed and naps.

Re: How did you get rid of the pacifier?

With DS1 we were done at 15 months. By 1 year we cut down to car rides, naps and bedtime. Then we cut out car rides, then naps and then one day just put him to bed without it and never looked back.

It would have been sooner, but we had a trip to aruba right after first bday and we figured it would be helpful on the plane so we cracked down harder after that trip!
