How do you get rid of the pacifier?

Cold turkey? Or is there a better way? DS is 14 months old and has been waking up 2 times a night looking for his pacifier. As soon as he gets it, he goes right back to sleep. I'm thinking I should get rid of it before it becomes too late.

Do you put more than one in his crib? Doe she throw it out or just lose it in the crib?

If you really want to get rid of it I would say cold turkey since hes really not at the reasoning stage. When I had my kids my friend told her girlas that they needed to send thei binkies to Declan and Ronan(my sonsChat Icon ) They were oolder though....

My DS is 16 months old loses his binky alot at night and cries for it, sometimes it's out of the crib and sometimes it's still in his crib and once I give it to him he goes back down. I'm dreading when the time comes to get rid of the binky. He only uses it for sleep time.

Re: How do you get rid of the pacifier?

We used to keep 5 or 6 in the crib so DD could always find one.

After she turned 2, we got rid of them. We cut the tips of them and when she went to use them she was quite puzzled. We told her they were all broken and we didn't have any more. She kept the stubs for a little while and then got bored with them.

We had a couple rough days and a couple rough car trips but other than that it was okay.

Re: How do you get rid of the pacifier?

I never took my babies pacifiers away. My oldest gave it up all on his own when he turned 4.

Its just not a battle I chose to pick. I kept a bunch of them in the crib so he could grab one when he needed it.

I never understood the rationale behind taking away something that comforts and soothes a baby. But thats just my opinion.

Is he calling you to get it for him? Could you put 6 or 8 in there so he can always find one? Or do the pacifier clip onto his PJs (I know some people don't think it's safe, but I don't know how a 3-inch ribbon would choke anyone)?

Taking it away is not something I'm ready for yet.

Wow am I the only one who didnt think to put more than one in the crib?

She has one, if she tosses it out..well then tough cookie. She loves throwing it around. If she's not using it I take it away. If she *IS* using it but not really 'needing' it (ie needs comfort, nap time, etc) .. I take it away.

But I dont see me taking it away forever.. yet.

I know one day at daycare we simply forgot to send one in. She was ok. A little cranky, but lately as I've been stingy on the bottle she's relied on the paci more. Chat Icon

14.5mo and I'm hoping by 18mo she's off of it

Still I refuse to buy more. She has three. One from the hospital, a pair we bought. That's all I ever intend to own.

I went cold turkey...but I have read if you do it before 6mths old a habit has not formed. DS was 6mths, I throw them all out and replaced them with a small blanky at nap time. He was over it in 1 day. He did only use them at night or in public outings for 911
