Spinoff...How did YOU get rid of the pacifier?

DD is 11 months and still uses a pacifier to sleep. Fortunately, she doesn't need it during the day when she's not sleeping, but I know she's getting older, and it's probably better to take it away now than later.
I've tried taking it away before, and she would CRY and CRY and CRY. Even now she'll wake up momentarily in the middle of the night, grab the paci, and go right back to bed. I'm not sure if I am ready to give that up! Chat Icon Should I slowly introduce something like a lovey so she gets used to that so I can then take away the paci?

I stopped cold turkey at 14 months. She didn't need it to sleep at night but liked it for car rides and naps. It took about 3 days of whining/crying but that's it. Not as hard as I thought it would be. Chat Icon

cox sackie.

He handed us the pacifier (aka "fire")& said "fire hurts". We threw every pacificer out & went cold turkey.

When he asked for it, we said "all gone."

My daughter is a thumbsucker - we're STILL working on that.

Cold turkey... they stopped giving it to her at daycare, and when I found out that she was sleeping there no problem w/o the binkie, I took it away at night... There was (surprisingly) no problem!

We did it cold turkey also. My DS was 2 1/2 and it was the worst 2 nights of our lives!! The first night was really bad...he was up almost the entire night asking for his "nu-nu" and as soon as he woke up it started all over again. The second night was much better...he still asked for it, but not the screaming fits. By the third night he was fine.

*He did have it all the time before we took it away...I just thought it would be better for him to just go cold turkey instead of dragging it out. Good luck!!

We've tried (once) taking it away from her, and she cried for a good 1 1/2 hours before I gave in and gave it back to her. I know the best way is cold turkey, but I am DREADING it!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff...How did YOU get rid of the pacifier?

Cold turkey about 1-1.5 month ago at 2.5 yo

DS was chewing them. Starting to make holes in them. I started to remove them. Until I found one of them with the tip hanging with very little.

If the tip had detached, he could have shocked on it in his sleep/trying to fall asleep.m He has not had a pacifier since then.

It seems all our transition are cold turkey with him out of necessity/safety.

I haven't yet (dd is 13 mths and only uses to sleep) but I will do it the way my friend did: she cut off the sucker part and her daughter thought they were all broken (she was 2) and so she had no problem throwing them away! That is how I am goign to do it - when she's old enough to understand. i dont think it's hurting her and I would rather she suck a paci then her thumb.

Re: Spinoff...How did YOU get rid of the pacifier?

haven't gotten rid of it yet, but once he turns 2, we're going to give it a go.

I'm going to try to cut the pacifiers first and see if that works. If not, then cold turkey it is. Chat Icon
