Ok - maybe I was just having an I-don't-want-to-be-back-to-work-after-5-days-off-it's-too-f'n-cold-out cranky day. But it still just doesn't sound right to me
if thats how you feel it really doesnt matter what other say, those are your feelings. if it doesn't sit right..

Maybe I'm not professional enough ( ), but I don't understand how that can be taken as rude. Not being snarky at all, seriously just don't see what's wrong with it.
I use it all the time at work when addressing women in an email. .
Same here. It's used at my job all the time, by women, I use it myself. I am in Higher Ed

Honestly I think it depends on context - if it was an email about, say, getting lunch, that's one thing, but in a professional email about a work-related topic I think you should shy away from it. I know in my example I gave, the Judge would never have addressed an all-male group as "gentlemen'

I don't think it's professional. Changes are if it were all men he wouldn't have written "gentlemen." I once had a Judge call myself, my client, and the opposing party (all female) up to the bench by saying "ladies, you can come back up" and I was really perturbed.
A female colleague and I were once called "lawyerettes" by a judge - so I guess relatively speaking this isnt so bad
Woah. That's... woah. I would have had a hard time not commenting on that to the judge.

Is this kind of rude?
Depends. Definitely not the best word choice for the office, but again depends on culture of organization and context. I could see how it could irk you or someone. At least he didn't say girls :/

Re: Is this kind of rude?
It's definitely not rude, maybe not so professional, but it wouldn't offend me at all.
Now if he had say "Girls..." instead, I would feel differently.

Oh now that's RUDE. I don't find the e-mail being addressed to "Ladies" rude, though it does seem unprofessional or too familiar.

Is this kind of rude?
The CPA firm that we use addresses ALL letters to "Gentlemen", which I find so obnoxious. I'm the controller and every year when I open the tax package, everything says "Gentlemen, Please find enclosed ...." Its a decent sized firm and every year I cant believe they send things out like that to all of their clients.

Wow! That's crazy that they would still be doing that. I can't believe no one has called them out on it - or if they have, that it hasn't been changed

Re: Is this kind of rude?
I don't think it's either rude OR unprofessional -
It's a polite and formal way to address a group of women.
Did he HAVE to 'point out' the fact that you're all women? No .......but you ARE .......so, what's the problem?
If he'd opened his email with "Hi girls" or "Hey" or "What's up chickies" ........Ok, you've got something .....but referring to you as "Ladies' ????? I don't see what's offensive about that
