When you get into a fender bender (something minor like getting rear ended on a side street); no injuries etc. Do you wait for the cops to come? Or do you just exchange info and call it in?

If there's any kind of damage, I would definitely call the police. However, I would say call anyway b/c who knows if the other person would say 2 days later that they're injured and then you have no record of who's fault.

exchange information and go down to your local precinct within 24 hours and file a report, just to be safe.

Re: fender bender
I would always, in any type of motor vehicle crash, obtain a police report. If you go through insurance to fix any type of damage a lot of times they request a police report after the fact and you'd have to go and get one anyway.
But, the biggest reason is to avoid someone trying to screw you. What if they fabricate their information? What if they lie? What if they tell a whole different story to their insurance than what happened? I mean, the list of what ifs with shady people could go on and on. It's just better off to have one written up. It should only take about 20-30 minutes depending on how quickly the officer can arrive to the call.
HTH!

I would always call. You never know what the other person is going to say happened. They may try to make it sound like you were at fault (if it was their fault) or may all of a sudden claim they were injured. I've seen it so many times (used to work in the field)

Re: fender bender
I had a girl whos foot slid of the break at a light. She bumped me. I had no damage not even a scratch so we went on our separate ways. It depends on the damage. Even if she scratched my bumper I probably would have not called police. Also my car was 8 years old so that also made a difference.

Re: fender bender
When I got in one the first thing my insurance company asked was if I got a police report.
You need that to protect yourself. How do you know other person isn't going to make up some BS or say they were injured by you or that it was your fault when it wasn't
ALWAYS get a police report.

As a former insurance defense attorney and currently a personal injury attorney--get a report.

Re: fender bender
I always call the police. Last time an elderly women tapped me from behind at red light, no damage but cop came. We were told they don't write up police reports if NO damage. But I did take her info & notified my ins co w her info in case something ever came up.

This. If there's no damage? They really don't do anything.
Plus I feel like it's a waste of law enforcements time and effort for something very minor.
I've just exchanged info and had it taken care of independently

Yes police except the time I hit a parked car, I did not call. I was completely at fault and notified the owner of the car. My insurance took care of it.

If its a minor fender bender, no injuries...you can exchange info...no need to call police. If you intend to get car fixed through insurance, then yes get a report. If your gonna handle it on your own there is no need for a report. You have up to 10 days to report a MVA with no injuries.
