A cute Halloween themed dessert. Even those cut and bake sugar cookies you can do yourself. It's a nice gesture.

I think for something like this I might no either. I would assume the mom would have lots of sugary treats.

I brought a gift to the son of a family who invited me to an Easter egg hunt. I suppose this is similar. I just got one of those $5 books for kohls cares, so it also doubled as a charity thing. Just a little token. The family spent a lot of $$ on the egg hunt and snacks, so I figured a gesture would go a long way.
You could also make a small gift bag that can be seen as a hostess gift or food to put out for the kids and let the hostess decide - package of jelly belly jelly beans and bag of kettle corn popcorn.

We did a whole class end of year party. People brought food to share, or wine for the adults. Only one person brought a gift for DS.
