car buying question
has anyone purchased a new car recently and care to share how much below sticker they paid? I know there is no set answer, and there are things to take into consideration, I am just trying to gauge what cars to look at based on my budget. Did you get 1k-2k below sticker? 4k-5k below? etc Ballpark is fine any advice on car buying is also appreciated
We may be considering a 2015 model so I think there is more room to negotiate as opposed to a 2016 model

Re: car buying question
mine was used - only 3k miles. i i got 4k off without even trying, meanwhile other dealerships they would take off $500 and act like they are giving you their kidney.

Re: car buying question
I'm not sure how much below sticker we paid last year for our car but I believe we paid invoice.
I highly recommend using TrueCar.com.
Helped us figure out what the average was as well as what a great price was. Its a little hassle when every dealer starts email and calling you (only if you sign up) but it made the process feel much better than the last time we bought a car. At least there was less feeling like I got taken for a ride.

Re: car buying question
When I worked for a Nissan dealership many moons ago, it seemed like the sticker price was anywhere between $1,500-$4,000 over invoice. The less expensive cars, like the Sentra, were closer to the bottom of that range while the Maxima and Pathfinder were at the higher end. I've always used that as a gauge. I assume that there is $4k built into a sticker price on a car over $30K. If you are talking about higher end cars, I would think it's even more. I also look at websites like Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book to get an idea of the numbers.

i second or third that. It is very helpful. You can sometimes do a bit better, but gives you a starting point.
for reference on my 2016 Subaru WRX Sti that I ordered, I got $500 under Invoice which was about 8-10% under sticker and about $1K under the truecar amount. However part of that was ordering the car, the car is in demand and the ones on lots were going for a premium. more normal cars, truecar would be closer.
my parents bought using truecar, the wrinkle is that you configure it a certain way, but the dealer may or may not have what you're looking for, then you do have to pay attention to what the price is from there. Also, bring your own financing to make sure you're getting a good rate.

Re: car buying question
thanks for the advice! I went to truecar and looked up the 2015 model i was interested in and the pricing from truecar was about $2,000 MORE than the sticker price on the company website which i thought was odd
But i just looked up a 2016 model and it seems to be more accurate and very helpful

Re: car buying question
Pretty sure we went through True Car. We started at Consumer Reports that led us to another site, which I think was True Car. You build your car and find it locally. They give you the price on the internet and that's the price you would pay at the dealership. No negotiation needed. Only caveat is that you have to finance the car when you buy it. But we got a super low interest rate, and you can put as much down as you want and pay it off as early as you want, so the need to finance it can kind of become null if you want to pay it off right away.
