Bed bugs?? I'm not trying to get any one upset, but I'm having a hard time deciding, and losing sleep over it! We're going to Disney for a family wedding. One resort is almost $400per night and the other is under 200 a night. Both Disney properties. We don't really have the extra money to stay at the 400 a night resort, but people we are going with are staying at the expensive one only because the cheaper one had bed bugs in August (We are going in March).

1. Would you suck up the extra money and go with the expensive one?

2. is it enough to check the room for the bugs? How do YOU do that?

No matter what hotel I stay in, I check for bed bugs and clean before I put my things away. I remove all sheets from the bed and press on the corners. They look like little black seeds. I do not sit on chairs without a towel down on them. I use a lysol wipe on the TV remote and the phone.

Honestly anyone is truly misguided if they think a more expensive hotel is bed bug free.

The Plaza can and or probably had had bed bugs.

I would stick to my budget.

If the $400 hotel is out of budget, then definitely go with the cheaper one. #1- any hotel can have bed bugs, most have at some point or another #2- March is a long time away. The $400 hotel could have them by then ;) #3- yes, you can check for them yourself. Just google it

Is is possible to find another affordable hotel? If not, March is a long way off. I would *hope* they'd have their problem fixed by then. At the same time, bed bugs are hard (and very expensive) to get rid of, so I'd avoid them at all cost.

I went to Disney in May and stayed at a more expensive property because the less expensive hotel we were considering had bed bugs a couple of weeks earlier. I chose to spend more to stay in a place that did not have a recently reported case.
I always check for bed bugs when I check into any hotel--like other posters said any hotel can get bed bugs.

If you can't flex the more expensive place then stay at the other place. I always check the beds doe bed bugs when we go away. We NEVER put our clothes in the drawers, our suitcase, sneakers, and other items are place in top of the dressers where they stay for our entire trip. We hang up what needs to be hung up. I never sit in the couches or chairs without one of the hotel towels down. I'm a huge bug freak and a huge germaphobe so staying in hotels is hard for me. If they only had 1 bed bug case in years I may stay there. I would probably pay the extra to stay somewhere else or find another affordable place though if it was me. But you do what you have to do.

ETA: we also out ALL of our clothes in a dryer on high heat for 40 minutes before we leave the hotel just in case. And all of our clothing gets washed in hot water and dried on high as soon as we walk in the door.

Honestly I think probably every Disney hotel has had them. Disney is at least good about taking care of it. Makes my skin crawl but any property can have them (people bring them in too in the luggage from flying).

Just do a good check before you unpack, but you should do that anywhere not just there.

I have stayed in hotels with bed bug reports. A lot of hotels have reports. Especially in big citiea.
As others have said, any hotel could get them at any time. Also, you never know if the reports are correct.
I think Disney and major hotels probably have pest services that regularly check the hotel and respond to reports.
So, a Disney property, yes, I would still stay there

I usually check bedbugregistry.com or Google the hotel name and "bug" or "roach" because any bugs freak me out! So, I am just checking reports & reviews by travelers. The reason I said they might not be correct is some people just report getting rashes or bites afterwards so who knows what those are from.

It was on an online review with the hotel which prompted me to look up the bed bug registry.

The expensive Disney hotels have bedbugs too. I stayed at the POLY, and about two months after me reports came out that someone found bedbugs.

All of them have them! What I do is check every single hotel I go to, before I even take my luggage past the bathroom/front door. I take a flashlight with me, I check behind the beds, in the outlets (shine the flashlight), under the sheets, on the mattress, in every single drawer, in the closet. I do a quick 5 minute check.

Once all clear, I will bring my stuff in further. BUT…I never put my luggage on the bed, or too close to the bed regardless. If the bathroom is big enough, I even leave my luggage in the bathroom. Bedbugs stay closest to where people sleep. I never leave clothing laying around (put it back in my luggage or I bring a garbage bag that I put all dirty clothes in as we go along, and tie daily). I also won't keep shoes by the bed, keep them in the vestibule or hallway or bathroom. Etc. All things like this, makes me feel more at ease should we get bitten one night despite my checks.

I feel comfortable doing all of this and then when I get home all clean clothes get thrown in dryer, luggage does NOT go on my bed in my house, and all dirty clothes get washed. That's my routine. I am sure it would help a bit if the room turned out to have bedbugs.

In addition, too many people lay their luggage on the bed and leave it wide open!, they throw their clothes around where a bug could crawl in and stow away, they put clothes in the drawers. This is where you can really invite them to come home with you.

I thought I was the only one who did all of this and my husband used to think I was crazy. Now even when he goes on his golf trips with his buddies he does the same thing. I really believe it makes a huge difference doing all of this. We even stopped bringing big suitcases and using huge duffel bags so we can throw them in the dryer in high when we get home. Anyplace can get bed bugs.

I do the same thing. There is no official registry where any reports are confirmed. Some reviews are more believable and detailed than others and I try to read them all. But for a Disney property, I agree with a lot of other posters that say that every Disney hotel has probably had bed bugs or roaches at some point. It's pretty much unavoidable. Disney is one company that I have no doubt takes care of their issues ASAP, so I would not worry about the prior reports. Just thoroughly check the room out when you get there (that goes for whatever hotel you end up choosing), and use reasonable precautions.

Thanks everyone. I'm learning a lot on how to thoroughly check the room and I will be using the suggestions on bringing our suitcases in etc. we are probably going to book the cheaper one. I just keep thinking about the extra 200 a night that we could spend elsewhere.

It doesn't matter what hotel I stay at..expensive, inexpensive I always check for bed bugs before putting my stuff down and settling in.

I would stay at the resort in your budget. I can guarantee you with the amount of people in and out of Disney that every single hotel has had some issues with bed bugs. The good thing is that Disney is very good and quick to fix the bed bug issues. Have fun!!
