YMCA for Swimming

We have done group swim at the Huntington location. It's clean, safe and the water is heated. Not exactly Olympic training, but dd has fun

Re: YMCA for Swimming

Are you doing group or one on one?

Dd who turned 3 in April did two rounds if group swim. She had fun but honestly it was more waiting for your turn since there was 10 kids in the class for a 30 min session. She learned some things but DH and I said we would probably do one on one for more time in the water.

Eta: this is not the flushing Y, I live in jersey nkw

Re: YMCA for Swimming

Im OOS but my kids 5 and a half and 3 and a half just went for lessons at our local YMCA. They did really well. There were about 6 kids in the class. Took a group lesson. They are by no means "swimmers" after the lessons but can float, learned to kick, blow bubbles in water, and swim using those big noodles. It definately got them more comfortable being in the water. Next round we will do one on one lessons.

YMCA for Swimming

DD did two or three sessions at the Y in Long Island City. Group swim classes, but there were never more than 5or 6 kids in her group and 2 instructors. She surprised us by being able to "swim" this summer. It's not a true swim, but she can doggie paddle and keep herself above-water and can doggie paddle under water. She can also float on her back-- which she couldn't do before that. She has no issues jumping in and being underwater. She's 5. I think it depends on the kid and the instructor- we were lucky. For the price, I think it's worth it- it's much more reasonable than other swim programs and definitely helps make them comfortable in the water.

Re: YMCA for Swimming

My dds went for lessons at the arverne Y the did group lessons, only 5 kids per instructor, they didn't really learn but that was on my kids, other kids were doing fine, I switched to private lessons and they are doing great, as a pp said it depends on the kids and the instructor, if you can afford private lessons I would do that, they learn so much more and progress faster, it is money well spent
