3 week old's poop

DS's poop the last couple days has been clay like instead of the usual looser mess its been. I did a quick google search and saw it could be constipation. he's only 3 weeks and is on similac.

has this happened to anyone? what was the result? should i call the ped?

My ds had that for a few days too (he's 6 weeks old now), but then it went back to normal. During his appt, I asked the doctor & she didn't seem concerned. I guess if it continues like that, your doctor could check it out.

Dd was constipated and her poop came out as pebbles.

ok its def not pebbles. but its more solidified than before. he's def been having gas pain lately. i gave him gripe water today. i'll keep an eye out

You're a-okay and its perfectly normal. I recently dealt with this with DD who is 5 weeks old. She was pooping flat pancakes that had a clay-like consistency and little hard pebbles of poop. She was visibly straining while pooping (clenching, face turning bright red). I took her to the pediatrician and he said its totally fine. A baby's digestive system is immature and constantly changing in the first few months of life. He said I could give her 1 oz of water a day in additional to her normal feedings and this seemed to help. I recently stopped with the water (mostly because DD hated drinking it). Her poop is completely back to normal and is a more liquid like/messy consistency. FWIW, she is also formula fed and was on Similac. I recently switched her to the BJ's brand powder and she's doing great on it and its a fraction of the price!
