Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
I can't really speak for the future, but I would love to help my children in some capacity.
maybe we can cover the first two years and they take loans for the remaining 2 years. of course depending on the cost.
If by chance we can easily afford to cover their collage, than I would love to!
I can easily make them understand the value of a dollar and how hard work pays off in other ways. as it is, they know not to expect toys or get everything they want.
When they get older, they can work for things they desire but we will provide the basic needs. Any designer anything or need to own 30 pairs of jeans will have to come from there own hard work.
with that said, we will help them with college as much as we can while not bankrupting ourselves in the process.

We will assist with paying but will not pay it completely, depending upon the school. If the tuition is lower and we can cover it we will.

If we have the means to, I would love to pay for a majority of it. But at the same time, I would love for them to understand the value of such a thing which is why I wouldnt pay for it 100%. I have paid for everything on my own, and was forced to work my butt off. I don't want my children to struggle financially, as I once did, but refuse to give a free ride at 100% cost.

Yes! We plan to pay for their school. I want my children to go to the best school they can attend. I firmly believe that where you go to school DOES matter and certain schools open doors for you. I was fortunate enough to go away to school at a top school and it was an invaluable experience that I would repeat in a heartbeat. My parents paid for my entire education, spending money etc. and I am certain that I worked just as hard as if I were paying for it myself.
I have no interest in making my children's lives difficult just for the sake of it. There are many ways to build character and I believe that someone who had their schooling paid for has as much character and integrity as someone who had to pay for it on their own.

It is a goal of ours but I cannot predict the future. We are saving for them now and hoping that it is something we will be able to do.
I want to add that neither of us have loans, not having to pay loans takes a huge burden off of us and I feel like in a way it allows me to save more for my kids.
Both of us were fortunate to have parents who paid for our college so ideally we would do the same.
I want to add that paying for a child's college but putting yourself in debt is not something I agree with bc ultimately you may then become a burden on your child financially, so if we can afford to do it yes we will but not at the cost of not having our own retirement and savings.
This exactly. We are saving for them and hope to be able to pay off college but wouldn't do so at the cost of not having our own retirement and savings. We save significantly more for retirement.
My parents saved for college thinking they would be able to pay for it all but college was a lot more than they expected (I went to a private school). I had a partial scholarship and was an RA which covered housing and meal costs that year and with my parents contributions I graduated without loans. They were happy to pay it because they loved my school and I worked hard and had a great experience there. I was on my own for grad school but luckily got a full scholarship to law school that covered everything but books. I paid for those with my summer job. DH had financial aid and merit aid and graduated with less than $15k in loans for his bachelors and masters which we paid off after our wedding. Not having school loans has been so freeing and really made a difference in our lives. I would love do to that for our children if we can

Exactly this. The savings we currently have for them will definitely not cover college expenses by the time they need it. They can work for it like DH and I did. We are still paying off DH's student loans. I will help if I can but most of it will be on them.
Exactly. You can take out loans for school. You can't take out loans for retirement.
With that said, we will help with what we can but there are these fabulous things called LOANS which a lot of people take on. I just paid mine off and it was a fabulous feeling knowing that *I* paid for college and it was ME who got me to a better point in my career. We will do what we can but I will NOT put my own future in debt for my children to be handed college on a platter. They will learn how to work for things! That to me is a greater lesson to learn. I'm being reasonable. We won't have that type of money.

They each have 529 plans that we contribute to monthly. If the school they attend costs more than what we will be able to give them at that time, they will take out loans like I did.
We don't make enough money to pay for everything they will need in life. They will learn how to handle going to school and working to pay for things like cell phone bills, clothes, spending money etc. Just like we did.
To me being handed everything in life is in disservice. Working hard to achieve a goal is much more fulfilling.

I did not read any responses.
My mom did not pay for my or my brothers college education.
She paid for text books for both of us only.
We were told that if we wanted to go to college, that was our choice and we would need to figure it out. I was not happy about it then, but seeing things now it was for the best.

I would love to see all these posters post again in 10-15 etc years and see how this plan works out.
Have you seen tuition lately? Hofstra is up to $40,000 a year now I think. Its ridiculous. By the time my kids are ready for College a year will be a mortgage on a house.
I pray my kids get scholorships

And SUNY doesn't even come close to that.
If you plan it's not unreasonable to be able to come up with the funds to help your kids fund their education. My IL's put FOUR kids though college and they barely had two nickels to rub together. Somehow, they did it.
Investing and time is key. The earlier you start putting away money the better off you will be and the smarter your investments, the more you'll earn on your savings,

Yes, all of it. My parents paid for mine...all of it and cost of living. They didn't want me starting out when a graduated in debt..

, DH had to pay his schooling and we are still paying those loans off 10 years later. I had no loans which made life much more easier for me. So we have been saving since the day DS was born for this reason.

My fear is college will be only for the very wealthy and very poor. SUNY is our plan, but I'm concerned about SUNY. There are a ton of foreign students that pay $$$ for tuition. Aslo adding in genius children from the city :) It's going to become like the cal state schools ; almost impossible to get in.
I worry there will be a large middle class population with 200k wrapped up in 529's when tuition will be 500k. So, it's hard to plan for this.

I am curious, for everyone who said yes, will you still have a mortgage? My kids will be entering college as early as 10 years, I will still have a mortgage then. I really can't see how we would afford both.

We might not have our mortgage paid off by the time DS enters college, but we should have it paid off by the time he graduates.

Mine was paid for in full and I hope that I can someday do the same for my kids. I don't think having my college paid for in full affected my work ethic at all. In fact not having to work while in college to pay for it gave me the ability to focus more on my studies. I volunteer at St. Josephs working with some of the girls in an organization there. Those girls struggle to balance work and school and school suffers as a result.
Of course whether or not I will pay their tuition depends on our financial situation and how many kids we have total. May also depend on where they want to go. 4 years at my alma mater at its current price you could buy a house (not on Long Island, but in some places.) But I hope I will be in the position to pay for their education. I will at least help.

If we are financially able, I would love to pay for 100% of my kids' college and for a masters. We have accounts set up already and contribute regularly. That being said, they will have to maintain a certain GPA, because I am not spending money for them to goof off!

Each of my kids have their own bank accts that they can use to pay for college & we will see how far that takes them when the time comes. We will probably be able to help them a little but I just know they will also have to take out a small loan.
DH wants to downsize once the kids graduate from HS so if that's what we end up doing, we will not have a mortgage.
