Ear infection not getting better?
DS was diagnosed with an ear infection last Sunday. He then started taking amoxicillin. By Tuesday, he had an allergic reaction (hives) and then he was put on azithromycin. Today is the last day of the meds and he is still pulling on his right ear. I plan on calling the pediatrician tomorrow (we are away right now for Easter). Anyone deal with a persistent ear infection? He seems fine otherwise.
FYI he is 11 months and this is his first ear infection.

Ear infection not getting better?
My DD has her first ear infection as we speak and we have to give her the meds for 10 days. Are you sure today is the last dose? I would def. call the ped tomorrow, our dr. said ear infections can be very persistant. Hope your little one feels better real soon!

Re: Ear infection not getting better?
My son had this happen - the first AB didn't work - he needed Augmentin, which is a stronger AB.

I'm sure it's only 5 days - I was on the same one a few weeks back. The amoxicillin would have been for 10 days, but he only got to day 3 when he broke out in a rash.
I'll be sure to call the dr tomorrow. We should be home in time to get an appointment.

I feel your pain! DS originally came home from day care with a fever of 103, but it was just a virus. I just want my little one to feel better. He has his first birthday party next weekend

Re: Ear infection not getting better?
Yes, both my kids had recurrent ear infections to the point that they got tubes. They got the tubes after several ear infections within a period of 6 months. I replied on your other thread that my ds took several different antibiotics to clear the infections- amoxicillin, augmentin, cefdinir and then finally a very strong antibiotic that he had to get a shot to administer it. We did two rounds of that and then we got the tubes. If he is otherwise acting and feeling fine, the ear pulling might not be related to the ear infection at all. My doc says that teething also causes them to pull on their ear. Maybe 1 year molars? Hopefully it's just that.

I had read it could be unrelated/teeth related, but DS currently has no teeth yet.
Amoxicillin and augmentin seem to be the best to treat ear infections, but due to his allergy he can't take them :(
I'm going to call the doctor just to be safe. I have off this week so I actually have the time. Next week, DH will be traveling and it'll all be on me.

Re: Ear infection not getting better?
It's possible to feel the effects of an ear infection long after it's gone. Just b/c he's tugging on his ear doesn't mean the meds aren't working.
That being said, I'd bring him back after the antibiotic to have it checked that it's clear.

I agree. The infection itself may be subsiding but the fluid is still there, and until it clears, it can cause a lot of pain. I know myself, I have had fluid in my ears and it really hurt- though the dr said it was not infected.
