ear infection-how quickly feel better

DD is 6 mos old and has a double ear infection. She started her meds Friday night and is still crying hysterically when we put her down to sleep at night. How soon after the medication begins will she start to have some relief?? We all need a good night's sleep! !

Is she congested? When she is laying down does it hurt more b/c of that? MY DD had a bad cold and was so congested so for 2 nights I let her sleep in the carriage b/c it is was the only thing that could be slanted when she slept. It helped drain her cold so much and both times she slept all nite.
Hope your DD feels better real soon!

Yes...very congested!! The ear infection hurts her when lying down...or probably both really.

I would try letting her sleep tilted, it helped drain my daughters nose so much and I think that is why she got better quicker. The minute she was flat she would cry and cry.

Her ear infection might not be bacterial. If it is viral the antibiotics won't work. So she might have to wait it out. I would try to make her comfortable. Can you give her pain meds before bed, raise the head of her mattress so that she is not flat? Is their something she could sleep in that she won't be flat?

Also plenty of fluids, suction any muscus and drops to keep it loose. Humidifier too.

ear infection-how quickly feel better

With her first EI, she was on antibiotics for 2-3 days before she seemed to feel better. She ended up getting a rash from the amox so she can't have it anymore. She was diagnosed with another EI last Monday and is now on Cefidir (sp?) and almost a week later she is still pulling on her ear. I don't know if it's b/c it's not as effective or if the EI is worse. She also has a very bad cold with it whereas the first one, she didn't. I put a thick blanket under mattress to make it slant a bit. She hasn't had problems sleeping so maybe that's helping.

Chiropractics is supposed to be very successful with ear infections. I know a few people that use one for that. I personally have not done it

Re: ear infection-how quickly feel better

Congested?? Then, my BEST suggestion is the NoseFreda or "Snot Sucker" - I hate that term Chat Icon Anyway, it's the Swedish aspirator and was A SAVIOR FROM JESUS when our son was sick at that age, and still is... With the ear infection, he needed relief from the congestion first in order to breathe better and be able to rest when laying down, without pain or discomfort.

So we FLOODED him with saline solution - right in the nose and used the nose freda to suck all that mucus out. It was a Godsend.

I would say, because we did that religiously and also ran the humidifier a lot, he felt relief within maybe two hours of taking the medicine prescribed by the doctor. He really turned a corner pretty quick.

PS - you can get the Swedish aspirator at BRU or BBB :) It's like $30 but worth every penny. I'd sell my body to get that thing if I had to! Chat Icon

I never realized until I had a son how connected the ears, nose, and throat area all are - I mean, I guess that's why they have ear, nose, and throat docs!

Re: ear infection-how quickly feel better

are you giving her motrin or something for the pain in addition to the antibiotic?
My kids were usually fine after 1 dose of the antibiotic - but I would also keep up the motirn for the pain for a few days

When DD gets bad EI, our ped has rx'd ear drops for the pain, in addition to the antibiotic.
