Childrens Benadryl for runny nose
DD has a terrible runny nose again for the second time in 2 weeks. Last time I took her to the dr she said I can give her Childrens Benadryl to help dry it up so she can sleep. I have heard differnt things about this and am not 100% comfortable giving it to her. Has anyone given it to their LO for congestion?

Never did benadryl, but my ped recommends children's claritin or Zyrtec for the same symptoms if you're more comfortable with either of those....

I'm pretty sure she said 1 1/4 tsp when I was there not even 2 weeks ago. But I'm not positive. I don't want to give it to her tonight if I'm not sure. I'll call tomorrow. Thank you!

Childrens Benadryl for runny nose
We have given it for congestion. The ped suggested it when my older one was an infant because he was so congested. I try to use it only when they are very very congested that it interfers so much with sleep. For the liquid i have 3/4 tsp for anywhere between 22-32 lbs but I think the ped gave us a dosage if the infant weighed less. I was careful because of the sedative side effects.
My DS had a hyper reaction to it and I never gave it again but my DD has had it a few times for bad congestion.

My doc, who is NOT big on meds, suggested benedryl so I was comfortable bc I know my ped only gives/suggests meds when really necessary or when it's a mild med.
Initially I gave it in the morning but it can make kids drowsy and made DS super drowsy. So, now, I just give it before bed when he's congested... he sleeps great and it dries up the wetness mess!
The aspirating with saline and a good aspirator like the Nose-Frida helps so much also. And I run the vaporizer at night on HIGH.

Yes, I always give her a full dose. The two times, I let it slide, she had an ear infection. I don't chance it now.. the minute I see watery nasal drip, she gets benadryl.

Yes. My DS is 2.5 and we were told to give him 1 tsp. He weighs about 31 lbs.

Yeah I'm fairly confident you'll be OK - I know that the typical side effect is sleepiness and drowsy feelings... so, hopefully you get the typical outcome.

Hm thats weird... my DS ped allowed me to give benedryl, the dosage was based on his age/weight... I think at one point it was 1/2 tsp. They told me to give him that plus put him in a steamy bathroom when he was miserable and congested.

I mean, you can't give an AB because that won't work on a cold... But my ped tries to suggest SOME medications OTC that might help give my son a little relief until it runs it's course... Ya know?
Like, she suggested the benedryl because it has a drying out side effect... and that helps with congestion and the goo that just pours out of him when he's sick like that.
And for discomfort and general feeling like crapola she said we could give tylenol or motrin.
There's also holistic stuff like Zarbee's - Nell and other mamas on here recommended Zarbee's, which is made from honey, to me as a cold/cough relief and it helped my son a lot.
So, that's odd that they told you that.
ETA - of course this stuff was in addition to the saline solution, aspirating, and the vaporizer which runs on full blast 24/7 when he's sick.

They have certain dosing for children under 6. Your ped should tell you if you take her in. My Dd isn't 4 yet and they've told me she can have nguthtime triaminic and childrens mucinex when she had a really bad cold. It's nearly impossible for me to get my Dd to take them bc she hates the way they taste. I've had luck with the nighttime Zarbees. Plus mucus reducer. For some reason she loves it! But nothing seems to work for us during the day.

used (and still use) them all
I prefer the dye fee Benadryl Target brand. I have ALWAYS given her one full tsp only.
Clartin works too (generic brand) at 1/2 a tsp twice a day
But never both at the same time.

DD has been taking it since around 2 years old- but with the peds consent and the proper dose based on her age/weight .
The box doesn't have a dose for a child that young, but your ped can tell you.

My son started it at 9 months for a severe allergy attack. 1/4 of a teaspoon. Then when he was about 18 months old he had another bad allergy attack (crawled in the dogs crate). He was on 3/4 of a teaspoon. The first time I gave it to him, he almost jumped out of his crib.. I have to get the dose just right or it makes him HYPER or super sleepy.. He is now 5 and I still have to play with the dose...we are at 4 ML now...

Yeah.. COLD medicine under 6, very little you can do.. but NOTHING, no that's not true at all. Allergy were what our doctor recommended at 1yr.
I can say my office the lady answering the phone or the ones making appts, heck even the ones sending copies of records... NONE will advise. They will put me on hold for a nurse if a doctor can't be reached. Guess that's why I like group practice

I was annoyed after I got off the phone that I didn't push to speak with the doctor so I waited a little while called back and spoke with DD's doc. The doctor said the same thing--nothing you can do but let it run its course. I love my pediatrician and he has never steered me wrong before so we will ride this out. We are suctioning her nose and have a Vick's vaporizer in her room.
