UPDATE: Anyone's DC get sick/get another infection while on antibiotics?
DD just finished 5 days of Zithromax for bronchitis. (She has an alleged penicillin allergy). Last night she was in terrible pain, saying her ear hurt. It's typical for her to get ear infection after a bad cold/upper rrespiratory illness.
Is it possible to now have another infection, despite being on antibiotics? I would figure the Zithromax would have killed anything going on in her ears too. (She doesn't have a fever)
update: just got back from the ped. She has a bad ear infection in left ear and 101 fever. We also discussed the unlikelihood of the penicillin allergy. She actually got a penicillin injection in sept at the ER and didn't react.
So tonight the ped rx'd Augmentin. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the input.

It is probably viral. My daughter got adenovirus while on meds for strep last year. She had a bad ear infection. But it was viral so meds won't do anything.

SHe can have a viral ear infection. Probably a lot of fluid build up from the congestion. My son got them all the time.

Just my theory.....
The thing with antibiotics is they need time to properly kill... so if she had an infection (call in InfA) and the drugs were for 5days to kill it.. the dose was enough for just InfA alone in 5 days, but if on day 5 or 4 an ear infection kicks in .. it was NOT present on day 1 (AJ's always started 4 days later) then the drug wasn't working on that infection (lets call it InfB). So even though the antibiotics killed off InfA, InfB is still strong enough to survive past the dose because it wasn't treated as long. Sorry if that's a circular argument.
I always knew if she had antibiotics for one thing.. I'd count 4 days.. if she had an ear infection I KNEW we'd go on another set of drugs. It was inevitable.

It really depends our ENT told me a few years ago that the antibiotics remain in your body and should cover you a few days after taking them. Most ear infections are viral, so it is possible that it is viral, or there is a chance the meds just weren't strong enough to kick it completely.

I agree but I thought the antibiotics she was taking WASN'T for an ear infection? I thought it was for something else and now she probably has an ear infection?
I mean afterall isn't that why doctors always say completely finish your Rx even if you feel better because your body needs it?
PS: Really all your docs/ENTs say ear infections are viral? That ***** opaque fluid in their ears and fevers are just viral? Wonder why Antibiotics always seem to work to fix AJ's?  And she rarely got fevers actually. But we went through 7 types of Antibiotics during her ear infection mania of 9 cases in 12m.
